If you paint "modern" style plastic army men, how do you do it?

For me, the "bad" guys have an older style uniforms(olive green) no camo. "good" guys my own vision of modern camo.

Any other ideas out there?

Interesting about the bad guys wearing solid green. The US exports military uniforms, to Mexico, at least, which are the older style of solid green. ;-)

It depends on what I am trying to portray. Camouflage is actually rather easy to do: dip a rectangular toothpick in paint for the splotches, apply in a random pattern; repeat with successive colors. Doesn't look bad at all. Can be done with any base color.

I tend to keep mine simple, with the Green versus the Tan troops. I prefer them all painted, but I employ simple block painting, followed by Magic Wash, or The Dip. I've done some desert camouflage, but not a lot.

If you want to represent the Taliban, or other Middle Eastern Fighters, there are companies making figures to represent them, with AK-47's, and scarfs upon their heads. Haven't invested in any of them, though, as I have literally hundreds of the basic Green and Tan guys. Cheers!

I just got back into the older style figures--awhole lot cheaper than $30 USD for 5 figures.

But I will try the type of camo painting you suggested. The last time I painted camo I chose a series of brown/black/green/tan in a series of blotches.

I haven't found any Middle eastern types any suggestion of sites?

Here is one link, scroll down 2/3's of the way to see them: $5 USD per figure, so not inexpensive, but available.

Here is another link off of e-Bay:

I've seen others, but can't remember where. Sorry. Cheers!

Nice looking, but I don't know if I want to spend $5 USD per figure…

Sgt Slag19 Sep 2011 8:42 p.m. PST

I agree. Try searching TMP, if interested. I suspect, though, the other figures (the one's I can't remember where I saw them…) were more than a dollar per figure. Another reason why I game with the simple Army Men figures.

I've thought of getting some Germans, and Japanese figures, from WW II, but they're a lot more money than the non-descript Army Men figures I have so many of, already. I just enjoy the game, without any of the historical stuff creeping in to potentially ruin my fun with such issues as "accuracy", and historical-ness. Cheers!

I found some no descript army men about $1.99 USD for a bag of 25. They were in maybe '80s style web gear, flak jackets and some sort of auto weapon..I have some that look like MP5s and maybe a M249. Some of them have helmets, like a deformed fritz kevlar, a few have ball caps and berets.

The surprising thing about Army Men figures, is that they really do look pretty good, painted, and Dip'ed/Magic Wash'ed. They are phenomenally inexpensive, and surprisingly good quality for the price. There is a wide variety of poses available, and vehicles to match. If you go with 21st Century Toys vehicles, they are superb in quality, pre-painted to a high level, and affordable. I love gaming with these figures. Life is too short not to have fun. Cheers!

I paint both sides in camo but retain the green vs. tan theme. Like this:

Cpl I have seen your painting on the green Vs tan. I think that's the reason I started painting my Army men.

I also have some civilian contractor types painted up..

I am waiting for zombies..

Sounds good, Michael. By all means, show us some pics.

I'll try to take some photos--but I'm as good photographer as I am a painter. Maybe since they bigger the pictures will be better.

As for zombies..from the place I ordered them from said they are delayed to 12/28…
