Anyone have any more details on this battle by the 3 SBS vs. about half a company of Argentinians?
Apparently, 25 SBS troops, including one naval gunfire support director assaulted Fanning Head, in order to remove the 60 – 64 troops known to be dug into the area.
The Argentinians were equipped with two recoilless rifles, and at least one 81mm mortar, in addition to their other weapons. At least one round from a recoilless rifle was fired at the ships in San Carlos Sound, apparently without effect.
The SBS were dropped off by helo at night, after some delay, since the helo couldn't take off with all of the equipment with SBS troops wanted to carry, initially. Several sorties were required to ferry all the troops and equipment ashore.
They then advanced onto the Argentine positions using a night vision device, detecting the enemy when at about 1,000 yds. range.
The SBS were heavily armed, sporting 9 x GPMG's in their small force, and apparently at least one 60mm mortar. Another account mentions M203 grenade launchers, and LAWs being fired at the Argentinians.
Apparently, the NGFS from the ship was late in arriving, since they couldn't get the 4.5" gun to fire, so they opted for 60mm mortar support instead at first, along with the MG fire. Supposedly, the gunfire support, once called in, lasted for 2 – 3 hours.
I'd like to know a bit more about the armament for both sides, if anyone has more info, as well as a more detailed account of the battle, since it might make for an interesting scenario.
