Looking to build a small Italian force for the Balkans 1941 and it would appear that Skytrex could provide most of what I need.

Can anyone who has these or seen them comment on the condition of the Italian vehicle and gun castings? These moulds have been around for awhile and I'm concerned there may be issues.

I looked at the website and the infantry look a little nasty. Do they look better in person?

Thanks for the help.

In the 20mm world there's been something of unanimous consensus on Skytrex's figures for quite a while now: they are horrible blobs of metal that should be avoided at all cost. Their guns and vehicles on the other hand have received mixed responses, although IIRC feedback on them tend to be more positive than negative.

For infantry figures there are vastly superior ranges out there, all of which are available from the usual suspects, e.g. SHQ, FAA, Kelly's Heroes and Mirliton.

Try Reiver Italians. Half of the range have alternate heads for the different styles of Italian headgear.

I totally missed those Reiver ones. Thanks Spontoon.

Where are they on the size scale for 20mm and what other ranges would they mix well with?

Kelly's Heroes are top of the list although I also like the Axal Miniatures from RH Models-especially the Alpini!!IMHO they all mix well too…..KH & AM/RHM…

the Skytrex motorbikes are pretty good tho'- the figures are simply out classed (cast?) by more recently produced stuff….

Early War Miniatures has an Italian range.

What about using the Italians from Historical Products Company's SCW range?

Anyone have feedback on the casting quality or how they scale compared to other 20mm manufacturers?

I got offline feedback that the Reiver figs are nice and are sized on the smallish side of 20mm so they'd go good with SHQ.

Abandoning Skytrex for Reiver is like selling an old Skoda and buying an old Skoda.

Skytrex guns are good by the way. Vehicles are a bit light on detail, but attractive. For some reason the heavy weapons figures are better, so I have their Breda HMG, mortar, moto trucks, etc.

But now with a 50% price rise the whole range is deeply uncompetitive!

Doctor X,

The HPC Italians are the same figure as RH Models. The only difference is that HPC does not carry the Alpini since they did not fight in Spain. In fact, you can even use the Italians in Adrian pattern helmets in the Balkans to represent Italian-equipped Ustashe units in 1942. These were often given Italian uniform items and weapons.

If you are in the US and can get hold of them then the FAA Italians are very nice, highly recommended but a bit hard to get if you don't live in the US
