What are your reasons for participating in Flames of War tournaments? What specifically do you enjoy about them?

Henrix15 Sep 2011 9:47 a.m. PST

Hereabouts; nice people.

An opportunity and reason to play with some of the guys I don't usually game with.

I like the players in the area – good competition – promotes the hobby – My 10 year old plays and stays above the fray.

I started playing in FOW tournaments just over a year ago and have now played in several and been Tournament Organizer for a couple of tournaments. I have made several friends over this past year and the year previous when we got into FOW – I know that some of these friends will be lifelong which I never would have expected. I know many of the guys in the FOW clubs in the area and have gotten to know some of them outside the hobby.

Steve it goes to the toxic atmosphere of some who feel the need to chime in and bash whenever they can. As I have posted in other places recently shame on them. If they do not have something nice to say they should not say anything at all.

I can't understand anything more complex.

Buckaroo15 Sep 2011 12:08 p.m. PST

lots of reasons, it's the only time I can get more than a game a week in.

I've met very friendly folks and have had a great time, win or lose.

"Unpainted figures" – Not at any FoW event that I've run or attended for teh past few years.

"Interpretive rules opportunities" – I actually see a much higher level of rules consitency at tournamnets than I do in the "pick up" games. Many tournament players travel quite a bit and it has helped get most players on a common sheet of music when it comes to rules. Issues do arise, but these are minor and usallu easily arbitrated.

I haven't played in one for a few years but its not for a lack of interest. Its a good way to meet other people with similar interests and its a good fun day of gaming. the only time I have ever seen a rules issue in a tournament is when someone comes to one who has either been playing something wrong or using some house rule with his local group.

What are your reasons for participating in Flames of War tournaments? What specifically do you enjoy about them?

1. Playing 3-5 games all at one event
2. Playing against players I've never played before
3. Playing against forces I've never played before
4. Hitting the pub/restaurant with the guys after the event…have made some great friends through my tournament travels
5. Learning new things and getting inspired about new projects
6. Being able to game on some real museum-diorama quality table. Terrain in FoW events has really improved over the last few years.
7. Sometimes picking up some gossip on future FoW releases
8. Just having a great time with like minded individuals
9. Promoting Historical Wargaming at venues and with groups that otherwise would have been nothing but Sci-Fi/Fantasy

I don't like tournaments (too much of the same in one day for me) but played in one small one. It kind of fell apart after the first round.

firstvarty197915 Sep 2011 2:21 p.m. PST

I've had nothing but a good experience in the two I've played in run by the I-95 group, which is why I'm going to do so again at Fall In. Rather than walking around (and spending too much money) after playing only one game, I spend the whole day gaming, which saves me money. Well, that day at least… The next day my bad spending habits return!

Playing games with people I don't usually have the opportunity to play.

Getting 5 or 6 games in in a weekend

More often than not an opportunity for a good night out with the lads

To crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

Old Bear15 Sep 2011 4:11 p.m. PST

…and apparently to DH them if they show an unsuitable lack of respect. huh?

"To crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentation of their women."

Hey Derek, wouldn't that be more appropriate for a fantasy setting type game?

I have been in a few tourneys and playing new folks is cool, but it is not my thing.

McWong7315 Sep 2011 9:52 p.m. PST

What Derek said.

I don't play Flames of War and I don't play in any wargames tournaments – but surely the only answer needed is ….

TO HAVE FUN!!

Isn't that why any of us do a hobby?

Lion in the Stars16 Sep 2011 4:22 a.m. PST

To face new armies, usually, if not new players. Lots of guys will put together a new army, different from their standard Monday night force, just to surprise the other guys in the group!

kevanG16 Sep 2011 5:37 a.m. PST

I dont do FOW for tournaments or otherwise but I cannot for the life of me think there can be any difference in the reasons between fow competitionss to other wargame competitions or general sports competitions for that matter…..which makes the question a bit moot.

Because I don't like wwii games

Dameon16 Sep 2011 1:00 p.m. PST

I play FoW tournies…

Because I like playing against people who have taken the time to learn the rules, paint their figures as best they can and want to focus on playing a good competitive game.

Because I won't have to put up with players who want to spend hours bitching about rules or historical accuracy and then get all upset and pouty-face when they start losing and quit.

Mister X16 Sep 2011 1:19 p.m. PST

I don't play FoW or the related tournies.

Mr Elmo17 Sep 2011 5:02 a.m. PST

I haven't played in any FoW tournaments because they take too long and the experience would seem like a death march (9 hours?)

BUT I'd play for the same reason I play in DBA tournaments: a chance to have a mental exercise using my nicely painted models. I used to play in GW Grand Tournaments and liked that scoring system (winning, painting, sportsmanship, etc.)

Connard Sage17 Sep 2011 5:10 a.m. PST

I don't.

*NJH: So, that was you who "beaned" the Tourney Judge with the silver Tiger II? I thought it was, but you looked homicidal, so I left quickly.
