What's your all-time fav scenario for American Civil War naval miniatures? One that's fun, exciting, and has a roughly even chance of either side winning.

Historical or otherwise. Doesn't matter which ruleset. Preferably a situation with a lot of ships involved, rather than the one-on-one Monitor-versus-Virginia sort of matchup.

Historical, Almost anything in the Mississippi or Gulf Delta.

None Historical several scenarios of large Iron Clads fighting off the coast of the Carolinas.

I like scenarios with lots of wooden vessels. One of my non-historical scenarios uses the Union vessels Niagara and Vanderbilt (really big ships) pursuing the Stonewall and a pair of smaller wooden escorts into Havana after a storm. I've seen it go both ways.

We just make them up from the ships available.

That's what I usually do too.

I am only slightly familiar with naval actions in the ACW and will not be offended if someone tells me I dont know what I am talking about. IIRC there were only about 1/2 dozen ship vs ship naval actions in the ACW outside of blockade runners. Really not much to game on a historical basis. I too am starting a fleet for ACW naval battles and plan on using Hammering Iron by Pete Pig which generates random river actions. vojvoda (James Mattes) mentions battles in the Mississippi and the delta. James, what battles are you thinking of? I need all the historical stuff I can get. For that matter can you suggest some what if type scenarios?

Trents Reach is a fun one to play out. But I generally just make something up :)

I think that's about right, which is one of the main reasons I don't restrict myself to strictly-historical scenarios for ACW (or Span-Am War or Sino-Japanese War for that matter).

Mobile Bay was a fair sized battle but even that was only about 16 ships on one side and 4 ships on the other. I'd like to see something more along the lines of 20 or 30 ships per side.

One I like is a what-if – what if the Confederacy was able to concentrate all their overseas almost-purchases and bring them home together as a squadron and inbound they met a like-sized Union squadron. The Confederates would have a good 7-8 ships including some ironclads.

@ virtualscratchbuilder,

Got a list of the Confederates "almost-purchases"? I dont even know where to begin to compile such a list.

The Second Battle of Sabine Pass, fought on September 8, 1863. I found out about this battle when I was a kid through the book 'Battles of Texas' by Seymour V. Connor, with illustrations by Donald M. Yena, and published in 1967.

I was so interested in this battle that, in 7th grade, I made a (rather inaccurate) diorama of the battle; still, I got a Third Place ribbon for it! Here are some links about the action:

And here's the painting from the book that hooked me:

There were other actions along the Texas Gulf coast that interest me as well, but Second Sabine Pass is my all-time favorite.
