My wargaming frined wants to build 1848 Hungarians. I want to build a balkan Imagi-Nation to match him in this turbulent time, so welcome to Trans Syldavia. The backstory is they are breaking free of Turkish rule
. The army is: Trans Syldavian Forces: - The Zupan's Guard Zouaves - The two battalions of the local Trans Syldavian Infantry - Ditto the Trans Syldavian Artillery Company - Trans Syldavian City Militias and Gendarmes etc - The Trans Syldavian Border Guards - The Tran-Syldavian local Balkan light horse companies (Deli/Huszar style) - Local bandits/peasants/mountain men/etc So the question is, what uniforms? There is an annoying Outbreak of Blue in many armies of the era/area, so what do the TMP Panel suggest? |

Imagi-Hungarians? Colour, colour, colour! For the Zouaves, lots of red and some blue, but I would use light blue For the infantry, how about red jackets, yellow facings and light blue or white trousers For the artillery, brown jackets, red facings and white pants For the militia – anything goes! Same for the cavalry – lots of purple, orange, yellow, light green For the border guards, grey uniforms with green trim Just a few thoughts |

If you are using 15mm, consider looking at the Rank and File Bulgarians from the Russo-Turkish War range. |

Colors? that was still an era of flashy uniforms. I love the historical Hungarian mid-blue pants. Adding a red or red-brown jacket or tunic. Distinctive headgear makes a real unique uniform. Zouaves as a combination of pinks, whites, yellows. Artillery dark blue, dark green or black. Different color for Fortress, field and horse guns. Bandits, dull colors or like the Balkans with distinctive region based vests, caps and sashes. Gendarmes should be distinctive and colorful. basic Infantry with distictive headgear such as colpacks or busbys. mid-Grey or mid-blue pants; black or gray headgear, tunics white, dark red or yellow ; boots brown. Light horse will be a different color by unit as they are financed by local patrons. Local patrons also finance militia infantry so each company will have a different uniform. . |

I second Rudy on his posts, but I would also add some Irregular Miniatures 15mm Montenegrins from their Balkan War line – those are true Balkan figs!!! From what I remember of the Serbs of the period – they were in light blue jackets and red pants, with some of their militia units being in brown frock coats with green trim, etc. Actually, any color would suit – but blues, reds and greens are always good for the Balkans. Since your opponent is building Hungarians, I guess most of them will be in brown – any colorful uniform will do. You could also go the way of a Russian-inspired state and use green for your units. Your light horse could be modelled after the Serbs of 1837 – brown busby, green jacket with red collar and cuffs piped yellow and yellow chest lace with light blue pants and red stripe armed with lances. If you are using 15mm – try using Nap. Turkish Nizam i Jedid in fez and zouavish style jackets – they'll have bayonets and if you go with Minifigs, you can have 3 different poses!!! And most importantly, post pics!! |

If you are using 15mm – try using Nap. Turkish Nizam i Jedid in fez and zouavish style jackets You read my mind – I'm using OG 28mm Nizam-i-Cedit, Ottoman Balkan light cavalry, Albanian bandits and some Zouaves plus Eureka Evzones. Pix – of course

I just got the Osprey Balkan Wars book. It covers period that is 50 years later but the militia and second line troop would fit some of your needs. This is an interesting conflict that might be fun to play. WW1 with no trenches. |

Balkanic traditional dress has a lot of white, specially for the Albanians, with colored jackets.
Other versions (regional variation?) have them in fustanella
= tinyurl.com/3ppe7q7More diversity from Montenegro:
Croatia: (Orthodox?)
(Catholic?)
: Serbia
Macedonia:
Bulgaria:
Slovakia:
Bohemia:
Romania:
For regulars, Serbia 1900: link link More than a little dull except for the cavalry, and then light blue above garance trousers was rather common (parts of Austrian and French cavalries
).
Then Herge's Syldavia offers more colorful (mostly cavalry) uniforms:
There was also the Gendarmerie (those who attempt to murder Tintin following the historical example of Codreanu's assassination link ) in green tunic, red distinguishing tape, black breeches, black boots. A potentially inspirational thread about Ruritanian uniforms on the LAF: link link

The Russian Civil War is probably our favourite as it is so colourful and larger than life (my RCW outfit has Greeks, French – National and Colonial – Ukrainians, White Russians, Cossacks and Bandits)! We fancied a mid 19th century period to play too, and hit on this one for the colour/improbable armies/nationalism backstory (and my friend is Hungarian :) ). Abdul – thanks for all that, I have also been scouring Tintin for ideas too
d'you see the soldiers in the background are all in Mid Century Balkan bloody Blue :) |

An interesting Greek site on making clothing that you can but, has a list of the various Greek regions and the colors of their sash and vests. reports on the Greek War of Independence indicates that when troops are far off and coming as reinforcements, their region of origin could be seen. Was this because all of the guys were wearing unique colors? |

This wqas the site that I was looking for but it does give you an idea about the variety of vests and clothing for the Greek regions. link War Of Indipendance |

Ok in general colour of the uniforms of the era has to do do with mainly 2 factors: .- dyea availability .- what colours the advisors could supply/wear etc. most uniforms were copied along the lines of some great powers. Dyes of the period include blue and red. black and brown were fading very easily and thus avoided in general while green was rather expensive. that;s the reason why blue was dominating colour. for your guidance here is the a link of the greek uniforms of the period:
still copied along bavarian lines |

Thanks all, very useful. So far I have done the following: For the Zouaves, blue jackets, red trousers, red Zoauve hats with white turban cloth For the infantry, blue jackets, red trousers, white gaiters, dark red fez 2 different facings (yellow and red) For the border guards, went for "Semi-Grenzer" – Nizam with a brownish jacket, hungarian blue trousers, dark red fez. For the artillery, I have done a border guard Mountain gun – brown jackets, red facings and blue pants For the cavalry – orange-red jackets, (probably) blue trousers City Militia – I have collected all those with the small flat cap (like in the Montenegro picture) and am experimenting with colours. I will probably paint companies with different colours and then they can combine into a battalion. am tempted to paint some like Serezaner style scouts. Bandits/Locals/etc – the pix above show lots of white/off white/pale colours for the main coat, and various colours of accesories so I will mix and match these. I have painted a few, will post up next weekend when I've invented a flag :) |
