If you were limited to only five rulesets (and variants) to cover all of your wargaming, which rulesets would you select?

RobH Fezian Inactive Member01 Sep 2011 4:18 p.m. PST

I already have…

Impetus
Volley & Bayonet (1st ed)
Spearhead

Plus Crossfire and "Song of.."

Few "generic" rulesets are easier to cope with than trying to remember a shelf full of specifics if you game infrequently and like variety.

Nikator's right because no matter what I'm leaving out some genre that I enjoy. Even given game systems – none of them cover everything.

Hi,
My five would be (in no particular order)
Full Thrust
Check Your Six
Warhammer Ancient Battles
Arc of Fire
Force on Force

If I was able to add a few more rules I'd go to nine key sets adding:
DBA/DBN/HOTT (each variant slightly different but basically the same game)
Black Powder
Blitzkreig Commander/Cold War Commander/Future War Commander (again each variant is slightly different but basically the same game)
Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game/Legends of the Old West/legends of the High Seas/Gladiator (again each variant is slightly different but basically the same game)

Since joining my local wargames club a couple of years ago I've been playing lots of different rules and have never had the time to become really proficent with many of them. However, the ones on my list I find to be the easiest to pick up which give me a fun and satisfying game so I've decided to concentrate on playing them and not buying any more shiny new rules (except for Shako 2 and SAGA – help!)
All the best,
George.
