…and did he rather over-compensate for his (alleged) lack of stature?

I thought he was a Squat.

Connard Sage01 Sep 2011 6:50 a.m. PST

Stunty, squat, dwaff, shortarse. It's all the same.

woundedknee01 Sep 2011 6:54 a.m. PST

How did "shortarse" pass the bleepometer?

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP01 Sep 2011 6:56 a.m. PST

My info is that he was average in height for his time and place. Perhaps short in other areas?

Connard Sage01 Sep 2011 6:57 a.m. PST

Bleeped text (donkey) gets bleeped, arse is OK.

It's a British/American thing. Like Bleeped text/crap

He was 5'2" by French measure at the time of death in 1821. In standard English measure (that which we know and love today) he would be about 5'6" tall.

Hijacked quite early, as should most Napoleonic Discussion threads.

I never thought I would see the day a TMP thread sank as low as 'Lolcatz'

Napoleon was 30 feet tall, breathed fire and shot lightning bolts out of his arse. That everyone else at the time said 'oooh, in'e teeny?' is because they were looking at him from far away

Only because he wore lifts in his shoes…

This is a much better Napoleonic debate.

HussarL01 Sep 2011 8:35 p.m. PST

This is just rubbish! Just how tall is everyone on this post?

Edwulf01 Sep 2011 9:10 p.m. PST

185cm tall. Which might be impressive if I wasnt stick thin.

Supercilius Maximus02 Sep 2011 1:36 a.m. PST

6' 4" in old money.

XV Brigada02 Sep 2011 2:31 a.m. PST

Q >Just how tall is everyone on this post?<

A. Taller than the little Ogre:-)

Hmmm? Perhaps we should be comparing him with Orges rather than people.

Aliosborne02 Sep 2011 4:45 a.m. PST

He was short in comparison to heights nowadays but for the day he was actually above average height

It was british Newspaper cartoons of him that portrayed him like this and it has stuck ever since

Why does it matter? Napoleon's height doesn't alter the significance – for good or evil, depending on your view – of what he did, what he achieved and his legacy.

Do I detect a prejudice against persons of less than average height in the title of the OP?

Do the Corsican Ogre's admirers not like the idea that their idol may not have been 'tall, dark and handsome'?

Connard Sage02 Sep 2011 6:19 a.m. PST

I'm going to need a bigger net…

Cue that Randy Newman song . . . grin

Supercilius Maximus02 Sep 2011 11:55 a.m. PST

I'm fairly certain Napoleon was never a stunt man.

1) A British cartoon portrayed him as small, and it stuck.

2) He was invariably surrounded by his Imperial Guard, which was composed of men of above-average height.

3) He was taller than Nelson, but shorter than Wellington.

4) According to another recent thread on here, he bore a remarkable resemblance to Rod Stewart.

spontoon02 Sep 2011 1:46 p.m. PST

I'm trying to imagine that Rod Stewart remark! Yikes! Why does this question about Napoleon's height keep coming up? The poor Bleeped text has had two autopsies and remembering that the French pouce was equal to 1 1/8 old English inches makes Napoleon between 5'6" and 5'8" in life. Not a towering figure of a man but more than average for a Corsican of the 18th Century!

Manflesh02 Sep 2011 1:50 p.m. PST

I'm waiting for the 'Was Napoleon really a Space Marine' thread…

mashrewba02 Sep 2011 1:58 p.m. PST

He was as big as an ox.
Angel B -that cat looks like my brother in law -it's a bloke cat…

HussarL02 Sep 2011 5:17 p.m. PST

This site is getting more and more silly! What next? Can't believe this?

1968billsfan02 Sep 2011 5:58 p.m. PST

He was often seen and shown against the background of his guards, who were selected for being scarry tall and wearing 18"(?) tall hats on top of their heads. Yep, he looked small compared to them.

Edwulf02 Sep 2011 6:52 p.m. PST

He wasn't a space marine maybe he was in the imperial guard though.

HussarL02 Sep 2011 7:18 p.m. PST

Okay talk about short, General Grant 5'8", Wellington 5'9", Alexander the Great 5'6", T. "Teddy" Roosevelt 5'8", general Eisenhower 5'10", Julius Caesar 5'2". I bet there are lot of short people on this site not coming forward. Stop making fun of short people! Luck is on your side if you were born tall. I guess everyone here is over 6' tall?

Lion in the Stars02 Sep 2011 9:26 p.m. PST

Not anymore… Amazing what happens when you suffer an L1 burst fracture.

So, he was 5'6" in current units, huh? Excellent.

Connard Sage02 Sep 2011 9:31 p.m. PST

I'm trying to imagine that Rod Stewart remark! Yikes!

That would have been me

mashrewba03 Sep 2011 3:33 a.m. PST

Well no cos that would make Rod Stewart really old -er…

M C MonkeyDew03 Sep 2011 3:58 a.m. PST

Innit he?

HussarL03 Sep 2011 8:59 a.m. PST

Okay! This is a little better, Rod Stewart does resemble Napoleon. They are about the the same height! Rod is only 5'7".
