Connard Sage | 01 Sep 2011 6:50 a.m. PST |
Stunty, squat, dwaff, shortarse. It's all the same. |

How did "shortarse" pass the bleepometer? |
Shagnasty | 01 Sep 2011 6:56 a.m. PST |
My info is that he was average in height for his time and place. Perhaps short in other areas? |

He was 5'2" by French measure at the time of death in 1821. In standard English measure (that which we know and love today) he would be about 5'6" tall. |

I never thought I would see the day a TMP thread sank as low as 'Lolcatz' Napoleon was 30 feet tall, breathed fire and shot lightning bolts out of his arse. That everyone else at the time said 'oooh, in'e teeny?' is because they were looking at him from far away Pat |

Q >Just how tall is everyone on this post?< A. Taller than the little Ogre:-) Hmmm? Perhaps we should be comparing him with Orges rather than people. |
Aliosborne | 02 Sep 2011 4:45 a.m. PST |
He was short in comparison to heights nowadays but for the day he was actually above average height It was british Newspaper cartoons of him that portrayed him like this and it has stuck ever since Al |
arthur1815 | 02 Sep 2011 6:13 a.m. PST |
Why does it matter? Napoleon's height doesn't alter the significance – for good or evil, depending on your view – of what he did, what he achieved and his legacy. Do I detect a prejudice against persons of less than average height in the title of the OP? Do the Corsican Ogre's admirers not like the idea that their idol may not have been 'tall, dark and handsome'? |

I'm fairly certain Napoleon was never a stunt man. 1) A British cartoon portrayed him as small, and it stuck. 2) He was invariably surrounded by his Imperial Guard, which was composed of men of above-average height. 3) He was taller than Nelson, but shorter than Wellington. 4) According to another recent thread on here, he bore a remarkable resemblance to Rod Stewart. |
spontoon | 02 Sep 2011 1:46 p.m. PST |
I'm trying to imagine that Rod Stewart remark! Yikes! Why does this question about Napoleon's height keep coming up? The poor has had two autopsies and remembering that the French pouce was equal to 1 1/8 old English inches makes Napoleon between 5'6" and 5'8" in life. Not a towering figure of a man but more than average for a Corsican of the 18th Century! |

He was often seen and shown against the background of his guards, who were selected for being scarry tall and wearing 18"(?) tall hats on top of their heads. Yep, he looked small compared to them. |
Edwulf | 02 Sep 2011 6:52 p.m. PST |
He wasn't a space marine maybe he was in the imperial guard though. |
HussarL | 02 Sep 2011 7:18 p.m. PST |
Okay talk about short, General Grant 5'8", Wellington 5'9", Alexander the Great 5'6", T. "Teddy" Roosevelt 5'8", general Eisenhower 5'10", Julius Caesar 5'2". I bet there are lot of short people on this site not coming forward. Stop making fun of short people! Luck is on your side if you were born tall. I guess everyone here is over 6' tall? |
Lion in the Stars | 02 Sep 2011 9:26 p.m. PST |

Amazing what happens when you suffer an L1 burst fracture. So, he was 5'6" in current units, huh? Excellent. |
