How about a poll for a band that was created after the 60s or 70s, for a change? My favourite is
And Justice for All (One), with Master of Puppets a very, very close second. |

Have they made a record since Master of Puppets? I really don't think so. Trapped Under Ice from Ride the Lightning was standard High School fare. I remember seeing them at The Stone in SF when Dave Mustaine was in the band
Geez.. I'm old.

I liked the one with for whom the bell tolls on it. |

I never even knew Ernest Hemingway was in Metallica. Or John Donne. |

Ride the Lightning. I didn't like Kill em All, mainly because I hate Dave Mustaine. Black album was only OK; everything after than has been mediocre

None, though I admit to being influenced by numerous unpleasant personal encounters with the band in the 80s. |

Master of Puppets.
and Justice for All is a close second. |

Ditto what Jay Arnold said. As far as not creating valid music after Master of Puppets? Are your kidding me? And Justice for All was THE standard for complex progressive metal for quite some time. The Black Album, while not as complex was certainly a worthy effort and stands quite well by itself; it can be argued about the softening of the music, etc. But seriously, nothing mediocre about it. Not the hard metal we were used to from them but very good. Death Magnetic is actually quite good. While not as good as earlier efforts, it is a return to more of the And Justice for All sound

anything before the black album. MOP, Ride, Kill, JFA in that order. Garage days wasn't bad either. Black was okay, but everything after has been poor – mediocre at best. Garage days was good to, just not a full album. |

Any one I didn't pay for, Lars. |

When you pick up a record from a specific band, there are certain expectations one has for the overall sound. While I in no way begrudge a band evolving its sound, when it does so it runs the risk of alienating the fans that became so because of certain qualities the band demonstrated in its back catolog. It is very possible that the post Black Metallica albums are good in different genres, I personally like Metal -- more specifically "extreme" (stupid phrase but there you are) metal
something Metallica moved away from. That being said, Death Magnetic might be a "throwback" album to their earlier sound, but could not match the technical artistry of Justice IMHO. Damon. |

What Plynkes said. As long as Lars doesn't get paid, i'm for it. |

For me, Metallica/Black. But Master of Puppets was good as well. Not as good as Queensryche though. |

Master of Puppets. THey certainly alienated me with the black album. I havent bought any of the recent stuff. Chuck |

Yep, they died for me with the black thing
but Master Of Puppets was THE soundtrack for games of Rogue Trader back then. |

I would have to go with Master followed by Justice too. I'm not a fan of the black album, I bought the next one whatever that was and just haven't listened to anything by them since. |
Dr Mathias | 01 Sep 2011 10:05 p.m. PST |
Hmmm. Hard choice
probably Justice. It was the first one I acquired and certainly listened to the most.. although I had a Ride the Lightning back patch on my jean jacket :) The Black album was hard for me to get into, but I did eventually warm up to it. At that point I was moving on to Sepultura and the like. Never did buy anything after Black album, nor did I bother to download anything 'post-Black' for free. |
