Metal – Motorhead, that's it. Punk – Sex Pistols. There were no other punk bands (Clash – over rated.) Hard Rock – Alice Cooper, that's it. Frank Zappa – Hard Rock ? Would that be his jazz or his classical stuff ?
Talking Heads punk ? Yeah, sure, as long as Tom Tom club are as well. |

I refuse to engage in doctrinal disputes, so I will not participate. I will only say that anyone who chooses Van Halen as "best" anything has a few screws loose. |
dandiggler | 31 Aug 2011 11:03 a.m. PST |
Punk: Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, and I throw in the first 2 albums from The Clash in there, even though the Crass fan in me hates it. Hard Rock / Metal: Black Sabbath, Mastodon, Prong, Clutch, Faith No More, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, and anything Maynard James Keenan related. |

I consider "metal" and "punk" to be subsets of "hard rock." Anyway
Hard rock: The White Stripes Metal: Some consider Led Zeppelin to be metal
Punk: 5 way tie between Pixies, Nirvana, Clash, Sex Pistols, Talking Heads. |
Sigwald | 31 Aug 2011 11:31 a.m. PST |

Tricky, tricky. I think I'll have to go for the Tom Robinson Band, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Jam. Blondie would be in there, but as Debbie Harry covers lots of bases as well as her punk roots I'll count her as mainstream rock. There are an awful lot of punk numbers that I love where I'm not much fussed by the rest of the output of the band -- "Oliver's Army", "Teenage Kicks", "Up the Junction", these are some of the best stuff ever. Honourable mention for Sham 69 for "Hersham Boys" because HQ Company of 6/7th Queen's was based in Horsham, and it was nice to hear "A" Company singing "Horsham Boys" at us when we provided enemy for them on training weekends. Of course, when I made up the cardboard counters for my infantry game based on the UOTC-issued Sandhurst Precis, the Blue forces facing the Anarchist Militia and the Fantasians were 6/7th Eton Rifles. All the best, John. |

I really only listen to metal anymore, and what my "favorite" band it depends on my mood at the time. FREX, I am on a black metal kick, so my top choices are: 1. Satyricon 2. Immortal 3. Darkthrone (early stuff) But I also have been listening to a lot of Behemoth, and Morbid Angel (save the latest album) is a perennial favorite of mine

Not set in stone favourites for all time but probably the 3 I've enjoyed most over the years are: KILLING JOKE SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES BLACK SABBATH But if Beavis & Butthead were to form a band, they would rule, of course. |
