Does anyone have information on the Franco-Austrian War of 1859? I'm looking for unit organization and some of the major battles between the Austrians and French. I know Battle Honors makes these ranges in 25-mm. And I can get most of the units I need for an infantry division if I wanted to play Chassepot and Needlegun. I also know of some Ospreys I'd need for this venture (namely the latest one that came out on the major battle Sarento???). And the two MAA Ospreys on the Austrian army 1836-1866 (both infantry and cavalry). Are there any online uniform guides for this conflict? Or this another obscure 19th century European War like the Russo-Turkish War of 1877? Any info or organization for Austrian units would be appreciated. Anyway, I thought about Wargames Foundry Prices and then realized I could get Battle Honors cheaper. So I'm wanting to explore the possiblities of doing the Franco-Austrian War of 1859 (instead of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870). Thanks, Blake |

It is certainly more than an obscure conflict, but having said that there are not many good recent books on the subject. An obvious choice – but not a recent book – would be Solferino by Patrick Turnbull. The Osprey on Solferino is actually quite good. In addition to the two Ospreys on the Austrian army, I would recommend ''L'esercito Austriaco nel 1859". It is in Italian, but with lots of great illustrations, and it has English captions and a summary. It also contains detailed orders of battle. I am sure an internet search will dig up a copy, or try Berliner Zinnfiguren's bookshop. It is not expensive. BTW, I recommend the BH range, very nice figures, although small by today's standard. |

There are few 1859 scenarios on the fire & fury francesa site. I've run Magenta many times. Palestro is also a nice little battle as is montebello. |

For an online history of the the campaign, Wylly's history is available via Google books. link I agree with Ottenfeld, Brooks' "Solferino" and Zannoni's "L'Esercito Austriaco nel 1859" are quite good. For an excellent source for OOBs and scenarios, pick up Weigle's 1859 ruleset. French uniform plates can be found in Leinhart & Humbert, link and Austrian uniform plates in Knotel, link |

The goto resource is Bruce Weigle's excellent 1859 rules
. OBs, Scenarios, rules, good art
. what more could one ask for
. grandtacticalrules.com His 1870 and 1866 books are lovely as well. Rumors are circulating that he has co-writer working on 1877! Joe Collins |
