These would be those pre-cavalry peoples like the Ti, I, Jung. They fought the Shang and Zhou (Chou). Curtey's Miniatures have some very nice Shang, but who makes the barbarian opponents in 28mm? Andrew |

Andrew, the only manufacturer that I knew about was Amazon Miniatures. Unfortunately, it seems as though they've permanently folded shop: TMP link I had a couple of samples that I requested many years ago (which I've since misplaced or lost), and I remember that they were pretty much true 25s, if not a bit shorter. They were fine, but it would be nice if someone would release a small range (say, 3-5 figures) of ancient Chinese barbarians. Good luck with your quest, Andrew/agplumer! |

well if its any help some of the tribes you mentioned also used chariots there is extensive documentation in the petroglyphs of the Altai region, the T'ien-shan mountains in Sinkiang, and the Yin-shan mountains in Inner Mongolia as well as the actual chariots found in the Sintashta burials As for the right figures
hmm i have not seen any but getting some Shang and doing a little bit of converting might be your best bet, we know they traded with the Shang to and have found some Shang helmets and weapons in their burials so

hmm SU16 and 16a are near naked, great for some Southern 'Barbarians' but are not really suitable for the majority of Northern troops , some troops yes, depending on area and tribe, or if taken as slaves by the Shang or Zhou a lot would be near naked
Jung is often used as meaning 'warlike foreigners' and used like the term Celt is used now, in one battle Guo Kang (854BCE) attacked them and got 1,000 horses as booty. So really there are a lot of minis you could use from Shang and Zhou ranges as weapons/helmets etc are similar, it would be nice if someone would do a proper range though ^^ (most of these peoples were not 'backwater naked primitives', as archaeology shows us), depending on tribe you could add a little bit of green stuff to slightly change the helmets, axes, clothing etc. 'wearing our hair loose and folding our clothes to the left' was considered a barbarian trait by some Zhou in realtion to some of these 'Northern Culture' Tribes (one of many references for clothing). Like everywhere in the World so called 'Barbarians' suffer a bad image, so if you want an accurate army don't get millions of ill equipped peasants and levies!!! |

I more recently asked the same basic question… TMP link I wish there were a better answer for the "Northern Barbarians" before the Huns and their "cousins" came on the scenes -- all riding horses! |
