Well? I stated in another thread that stifles are not the problem, the stifle count is as it encourages trolling. The stifles can stay, but maybe the most stifled chart is something we can do without?

1. Yes, remove the stifle count.

2. Leave it alone.

3. How about we remove it for a six month period and see if some of the invective we see here all too often dissapears.

4. What has this got to do with miniatures and wargaming?

Cheers,

Ace

1 – yes

2.
I don't see how removing the count will have any effect on the invective. Those who don't like me will continue to not like me no matter whether my count is visible or not.

For goodness sakes and the 3rd time (or more) in as many months (or more) NO!

Gazzola16 Aug 2011 7:23 a.m. PST

Just get rid of the stifle mechanism. No need for it. I assume that most people who attend this site are grown ups, and can decide for themselves if they want to read or reply to posts.

"No need for it. I assume that most people who attend this site are grown ups,"

Thats a big assumption.

John the OFM16 Aug 2011 7:26 a.m. PST

Are we going to keep voting on this until "we vget it right"?
Can we then vote to reinstate them?

Don't Polls settle ANYTHING?

Lentulus16 Aug 2011 7:26 a.m. PST

1. If most people on the site were grown-ups who could cope with some people not paying attention to them, we would not have to get rid of the stifle count.

I note that a small number of foolish persons have chosen to disregard the pearls of wisdom I have to offer. I am saddened for them :)

Then again, I am pretty sure Dave Hollins genuinely believed that exact same thing.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian16 Aug 2011 9:46 a.m. PST

I also note that a survey of contributors to this thread indicates that while obvious figures of controversy (stand up, John) have significant stifle figures, even the amiable and reasonable Ace from Outer Space, one of TMP's true gents, has been stifled by 26 people.

Seriously? Ace?

I can't imagine why they would do that. That suggests skin so thin their bones should be falling out.

Capt John Miller16 Aug 2011 9:58 a.m. PST

Ace,

Dude, seriously, asking that question leads me to think of two possibilities:

1] You're thinking of annoying/irritating TMPers on here.
(A weaksauce reason, of that I am sure, but it is included here for completeness.)

2] You have not paid attention to polls regarding stifles.

OK, let's sum this up:

Most of those who voted on the different "Stifles" poll indicated that:

1] Bill keeps the stifle system as opposed to removing it.

2] There is no desire for the "reset to zero stifles amnesty".

3] One cannot even know who stifled him or her let alone for what reason.

It's not going to change Ace. Stifles will be here, you cannot get rid of them and you cannot know who or why you got stifled.

Mexican Jack Squint: I agree with you on that.

I can't remember what I answered the last six times, and fear I might contradict myself by answering now.

goragrad16 Aug 2011 12:37 p.m. PST

But how many stifles did Ace have before he started this thread? And how many will he have tomorrow?

Stifles for bringing up the subject of stifling or expressing negative opinions on stifles seem to be the order of the day.

P.S. By the way – leave it alone. It apparently provides a 'safety valve' for some of the membership (how many will that get me?).

Space Monkey16 Aug 2011 12:56 p.m. PST

What is the purpose of the stifle count anyway?
To inform the poster he is an annoying prat?
To let other people know he's an annoying prat?
To give ammunition to the righteous who would like to present evidence that the poster is an annoying prat?

Isn't part of the OFM's notoriety that he has such a large number?… if people had no idea he'd been stifled so much perhaps they'd be left to draw their own conclusions and decide he's not nearly as annoying as his reputation suggests.

I'm for getting rid of the number. It causes nothing but trouble.

Andrew May116 Aug 2011 2:22 p.m. PST

Hi Captain Miller, it's not the stifle itself that's the problem, just the stifle count. Someone else, I think it was Arteis reminded everyone in one of the Napoleonic threads recently that this is a place we come to share and enjoy our hobby. Stifling someone who keeps spoiling your enjoyment of TMP is fine if it means you still get the value you want from this place.

But I do think having a stifle count, or moreover a hit parade of the most stifled does lead some people to go out of their way to collect them: Im thinking especially of Mr Hollins and his beyond the pale stirring on a recent obituary thread.

You are right though, more than likely I wasn't paying attention! laugh

Goragrad, 25 yesterday, 26 today.

And finally, to Mexican Jack, thank you my friend!

Grand Duke Natokina16 Aug 2011 2:32 p.m. PST

I reckon 2.

I suggested the same thing just two months ago:

I would not change anything, the system is well working.

Lazy rehash of what I said on another topic:

Remove stifles as a stat on public view of profiles. I agree with Venusboys3 and others that it only causes trouble.

Leave the functionality for those who choose to use it like ignore buttons on other forums.

Allow John to look at how many he has accumulated in his member settings.

Old Bear18 Aug 2011 5:31 a.m. PST

All the above seems to be a decent solution.
