Include a clip or two of him/her performing a song he/she wrote, even if someone else may have recorded it more famously. The latter is NOT a requirement, though. The clip IS, though.
You may define "too young" anyway you wish. It would be pointless and futile to try to put a limit on this. grin
Might I suggest that they at least "look" young?

1) Steve Goodman.

I second Jim Croce. Here he is performing one of my favorite songs that he wrote and sang:

I definitely remember the night it was announced that he died in a plane crash. My sister and I were coming home from her best friend's house, and, as always, we were listening to one of our favorite radio stations at the time when the news was broadcast. We were stunned, but especially my sister, since she had both of his hit albums, and had become a fan of his, She even mentioned at one time that if he ever came to Fort Worth, she would go to see him.

The second one might be him lip-synching – not sure. It's tough finding film footage of him and not Lou Diamond Philips.

Maybe I SHOULD have done it in Music instead of Polls. Too many good choices to wash out the final tally.

I'd have to go Croce, too.

Edward Woodward, who died aged 79, was a fine actor whose talents tended sometimes to be obscured by the huge popular successes of his bleak television series, Callan and The Equalizer. Was in Breaker Morant, The Wicker Man, and The Young Winston

I second all so far mentioned and add:

Kurt Cobain (like him or hate him, his influence on subsequent music is undeniable.)

Syd Barrett (Original Pink Floyd guy. Ok, he didn't really *die* young, but his life as a musician was cut short.) YouTube link

Since John mentioned Steve Goodman and several others, Jim Croce, I'll go with B.W. Stevenson. All three of these guys were getting lots of airplay in the early 70's when I was in college……

Some great suggestions.

It's time to mention Gram Parsons, whose death was sadly predictable, but whose funeral was unexpected – his friends stole the body and cremated it out in the Joshus Tree desert.

I can't access Youtube from here, but his work is easy to find.

I'll stick with RJ, but think Hank Williams deserves mention.

Kurt Cobain, Shannon Hoon, Lynn Strait.

Amy Whinehouse meets the criteria for the dead by 27 i.e: die young and leave a beautiful corpse hall of musical fame.

She must've taken one with her, because she didn't leave one here.

Sundance16 Aug 2011 12:08 p.m. PST

Also, John Bonham, of course. George Harrison. John Lennon. Keith Moon. Brian Jones. The list goes on and on. And some of these people actually had talent.

Nick Drake, Kurt Cobain, Mark Sandman, Ian Curtis, there are too many to mention. Mama Cass, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Marvyn Gaye, a whole litany of dead punks, rockers and metallers.

Plynkes16 Aug 2011 2:58 p.m. PST

What, all of those are your favourite, Ace? :)

CeruLucifus16 Aug 2011 4:10 p.m. PST

Brian Jones, in the dead before I listened to music category. The Stones without him lacked an important something.

Jeffrey Lee Pierce. The Gun Club records are rock at its most intense.
