Science fiction miniatures seems almost devoid of non-Terminator combat robots. Khurasan has some good killer robots and Rebel has some big bots/drones in their WildCATS and TomCATS minis. Really what we could use is a good line of alien-looking mechanioids or some good ol' Star War like battle and assassin droids. -Eli |

Almost devoid? You aren't looking very hard. Old Glory already has the Star Wars riff covered for 28mm: link Paint them in grungy metallics with some details picked out like the ones I sold through ebay a few weeks back and they're perfect droids. You can assemble them with different heads and arms as well, making them almost infinite in terms of variety. You'll note there are a pair of bodies that make nice not-Robbies as well. In 15mm, they've also got these guys: link link link Those make pretty good SW style droids with the right colors as well. Some of the putatively organic infantrymen in that range could also be droids – the Universalists in particular are inhumanly skinny for armored troops. The Ferreen come with floating orbs that make good grav droids. GZG's got tons of drones, wheeled, walking, tracked, and grav flying, including a spot-on astromech/R2 sculpt. Some of them (like those spider walkers previously mentioned) are easily converted – the whole top gun module is one piece, and replacing it with other things (parts from the GZG vehicle kits, torsos of humanoid bots) makes kitbashing new droids trivial. Khurasan has multiple types in 15mm, although some of them are OOP at the moment, including the not-Tom Servo. It's all a matter of how you paint them if you're trying for Star Wars. |
Eli Arndt | 07 Aug 2011 4:08 p.m. PST |
I am not trying for Star Wars. I am looking for a particular style of construction. Pretty much something other than the terminators and other kill bots that have been released over the years. Old Glory's stuff is alright, but not what I am looking for and the GZG stuff is more hard scifi looking. I think there are still some niches to be filled. -Eli |
clkeagle | 07 Aug 2011 4:33 p.m. PST |
Hydra's hoverbots offer a good place to start
you could mount a variety of weapons onto the arms:
Blight Wheel has this one. If they are going to continue with this theme, it might have some good offerings:
The Spider Drones are probably GZG's best offering. And even the Khurasan Mekanoids aren't trying to be Terminators. I think it's more a question of what specifically you'd like to see than a lack of current offerings. Chris K. |
infojunky | 07 Aug 2011 5:13 p.m. PST |
To be honest I prefer my deathbots to be a little less humaniform. I really like GZG's GunBots
The rest of the Remotes. Drones and Bots range link makes me happy. Though some Zhodani style WarBots would be nice too
|
Battle Works Studios | 07 Aug 2011 5:33 p.m. PST |
I don't get what you're after. If it's an anime look, browse Dream Pod 9's Heavy Gear stuff – the Utopian and Eden forces in particular have quite a few drones and some humanoid power armor (the Golem suits) that make fine 15mm combots. For 28mm, Tau pretty much goes without saying, and it'd be pretty easy to re-arm the plastic Myrmidons from Privateer Press with some guns (Eldar match their styling best) for more organically-curvy droids. For steampunk, the regular Privateer warjacks are good, as are quite a few of the constructs in the Malifaux range from Wyrd. There are also tons of bots in the OG/Blue Moon Supersystem range, some of which can scale-jump to 15mm in a pinch. The OG website seems to hate providing links that work – look under henchmen, alien host, and the 2007 annual release categories. That Zhodani bot would be easy to make out of a humanoid bot or power armor trooper with the legs sawed off. The Supersystem Killbots are the same style, but more retro/WWW2 styled. |

Battle Works Studios | 07 Aug 2011 5:47 p.m. PST |
Oh right, Infinity is chock full of them too, as 2bit elroy just pointed out. The Sytha from Void/Metropolis War are also full of good pickings, spread across several generations of sculpting. The current-gen androsyth models have a lot of the style of that Drone comic. |
Eli Arndt | 07 Aug 2011 5:49 p.m. PST |
Well, my primary interest is in 15mm, but in general what I am looking for is for somebody to make other types of robots that are not adaptations from other companies lines and are an honest attempt at making something that fits a niche that has yet to be filled. Miniatures companies have, for some time now, continued to reproduce new variants on old themes and left others relatively untouched. BTW, 28mm has it pretty good. I included the 28mm Discussion Board on here because I like to draw from as many sources as possible, but 28mm does have a good number of honest Star Wars and other style, non-Terminator battle droids. If you can find some spares from some of the Risk boardgames, you might get some robots from there. The Clone Wars edition super battle droids aren't a bad match for a BSG centurion. And the transformers set has some – amazingly enough! – transformers which are about 15mm and which could perhaps be a bio-mech lifeform. |

Could not some 6mm 'mechas' be used as 15mm warbots?
Certainly. The Cav line would be more difficult due to the obvious canopies, but quite a lot of the Battletech line show no canopy at all. Without getting too huge, and also still somewhat convertable for posing, I could see a 15mm "heavy hunter-killer group" consisting of Battletech Panthers |
