announcing only the figures and being vague…

I assume the game announcement is coming at GenCon

CMG model = acceptable, as it makes fringe critters economic to make at all
"Promotional Only" add-ons = neutral at best, horrible idea at worst. Won't boost sales numbers if the base line is a failure, adds to the expense of production with no profits except to the secondary market, and potentially cuts into the usefulness of the base line.

Rarity of certain critters can also have that last effect, per WotC's refusal to produce a non-rare Displacer Beast or Carrion Crawler, both of which should be bread-and-butter for a DM.

Are these roughly 28mm, like D&D prepaints? Or are they going to be incompatible with other prepaints?

The Beast Rampant01 Aug 2011 9:07 p.m. PST

Actually, DDMs had non-rares of both the displacer beast and the carrion crawler.

Wastelander01 Aug 2011 10:04 p.m. PST

^ took them 6 sets and the damage was already done

I see no indication (aside from the brand name) that there's a game attached to this other than the RPG. Which would mean that this isn't a CMG.. just CM.

ordinarybass02 Aug 2011 7:34 a.m. PST

It's pretty likely given the "Pathfinder Battles" name that there's a game attached to this. Now whether it's a real battle game or a pathfinder RPG spinnoff skirmish rulest remains to be seen.

Overall though, it looks like a good-enough release. If the pre-release pictures are accurate, then we're in for D&D quality sculpts with Mage Knight level (a bit neater hopefully) paintjobs. good for repainters and touch-upers.

Mini-gaming needs these entry level games and when the game is canceled (as it inevitably will be) I'll be there to scoop up some of the figs.

At the moment there is no game besides the rpg attached to this. I am still digging through the forum discussion about this on Paizo, and that what the Creative Director has said. Though he did ask if we would like to see one.

Read the comments, especially the official responses.

A game is coming.

I'm guessing GenCon will have the announcement.

I went back and re-read the comments to get links/quotes and found them edited/deleted…

Someone may have said too much in front of the GenCon announcement.

Shadowdragon15 Aug 2011 11:55 p.m. PST

Hmm, the sculpts actually look ok, in fact some proper paint jobs and these may actually look pretty good. I also really like the idea of not having to pay an arm and a leg to get a horde of pathfinder style goblins (the reaper ones are amazing, but very expensive for something you need a lot of). I'll reserve final judgement until I actually see the entire set and have some in my hands.

The Beast Rampant24 Aug 2011 6:23 p.m. PST

The Pathfinder gobbos are cute. I'd like to have some of them in a knockabout format.

IronMike26 Aug 2011 7:13 p.m. PST

I saw the words 'blind standard booster packs' and immediately tuned out. This will be a 'collectible' game, and anyone with sense knows that every collectible game under the sun has exactly ONE strategy, which is of course 'spend more than your opponent and you win."

Sorry, but I've been burned too many times to get excited about this…

badger2207 Oct 2011 3:07 p.m. PST

If you buy to play the battle game, sure you can get burned. But if yiou are buying to get minis to play pathfinder, this is a great idea. i loved the DDM. Parrticularly when the poeple wanted to unloaded the repeats they did not wnat. i have tons of commons I picked up that way and hope it works with these as well. I need bunches of these.

Any update on what will be in the set?

One looking more, I am less sure this is going to work. DDM $1.25 USD for a random figure. Not a bad deal at all, as over time you can use a lot of the figures. But $4 USD for a single random figure is a lot less appealing. So now the ones you dont want are 3 times as expensive as the DDM ones. I could live with a few no use $1.25 USD figures. Way less able to have $4 USD ones. $6 USD for the large ones may be OK, I will need to see how that shakes out with regard to whats available.

Again DDM made it OK because your $1.25 USD gnome was with the $1.25 USD troll or ogre or dragon. Perhaps if there are a lot of derireabkle larges, it will work for them. But I dont see buying very many $4 USD random mediums. It is just to high of a price point for a random figure.

I picked up the non-random iconic four PC starter set the other day at the LGS. Got 4 figures (warrior, wizard, rogue and cleric) for $12.99 USD. The painting on them is excellent esp. the crazy detailed patterns on the cleric's robes.

Will have to see how the random sets look before making final judgment.

Will this mess with Reaper's making Pathfinder minis? Some of which are very nice, despite my complete lack of interest in Pathfinder.

Shadowdragon23 Dec 2011 10:09 p.m. PST

Well, after seeing the pictures of the Pathfinder CMG minis I have to say that the collectible aspect sucks, the prices are too high for what you get, and the minis look like garbage. There is nothing to like about these minis. Someone should have told Paizo that the collectible minis fad is long dead. I may grab a couple of these when they get tossed into the 75% off discount bin, but otherwise I am very, very, glad Reaper is still making Pathfinder minis.

Shakespear16 Jan 2012 10:59 a.m. PST

I hate to say it, but the collectible minis fad is far from dead.

Neca are making these figures and are wildly successful with hero clix.

Goose66618 Jan 2012 3:46 p.m. PST

As long as you have roleplayers who are not interested in miniature painting (that being 90% plus of my rgp playing friends and aquaintances) you will get a certain level of take up of pre-painted plastics that are roughly 28mm in scale.

This is one of the reasons these companies go into it.
There is always a staple uptake percentage, price and quality depending of course.
