Interesting bloke – he was born in Belgium and apparently studied at the Austrian Military Academy before joing the British army. He was the organiser of the 1800 colour tests for light infantry uniforms – and recommended Austrian hechtgrau! I came across him many years ago as he had produced a Schematic of the Austrian army, which is helpful with the Revolutionary Freikorps (and thus can be dated to the mid-1790s), but he also painted many pictures of British troops of the later wars and I found quite a few here link |

He was born in the Austrian province of East Flanders (roughly what is now part of Dutch portion of Belgium).on 26 December, 1776. His basic education was completed in Richmond Surrey followed by military studies at the Austrian Academy for artillery and engineers at Malines and Louvain in the Netherlands. His military service was in the Brtiish army with units such as 8th L.D., Hompesch's Hussars, 60th (Royal American), 18th Royal Irish 1806, 6th 1807, DQMG Walcheren expedition, and the rest of his active service was in the QMG HQ of Horse Guards (with stints as an Int O and Eng O)while on the strength of the 15th East Riding Regiment. The rest of his life post 1815 was quite eclectic as a spy, biologist, artist (38,00 drawings), study of uniforms (1,400 uniform drawings over 3,000 schematic plates -lace, facings etc.) plus the aforementined study of 'uniform colour for protection--the forunner of camoulflage. And there is indeed much more to this interesting character. Ref:Wellington's Army:The Uniforms of the British Soldier, 1812-1815, Plates by Charles Hamilton Smith. |
