6mm, 15mm, 20mm, 28mm? I am looking hard at this and am considering the 15mm route as I can have multiple units for the same cost of one in 28mm. How about for you guys? |

There seems to be some good 15mm out, or due out soon, so I think I'm going to go that route. |

I like the look and feel of 25s better, but there is a lot of stuff out or coming out in 15mm, and as you note, it is much easier on the wallet. |

The one true scale for VSF is 25/28mm. 15mm fans are late to the party. While I have nothing against 15mm (I play a lot of Nappies,War Between The States,WW2 and other large battles in 15mm) but for VSF I have to much painted to change to a smaller scale now. As always at your service, Colonel Hairy Haggis |

Since GASLIGHT deals with individualy mounted figures, I prefer 28mm for my forces. I find 15mm a little too fiddly to move as individuals. I also think that you can see and appreciate the VSF-ness of many figures in 28mm. In 15mm it is hard to tell a regular rifle from an electro one. :-) |

28mm. More oportunity for weirdness at that scale..for now. |

28mm for us. It's the skirmish/RPG size. For everything else, 15mm. |

I use 15mm. Much like Colonel Hairy Haggis I have too much invested in 15mm miniatures and terrain to 'up-scale' even though I really like some of the offerings available. Cheers, Barry |

28mm as it is mostly a skirmish or small unit game. |

28mm, more toys to match the scale! Tally Ho! |

When I first started doing Colonial/VSF I played 15mm. Singly based, large skirmish/small unit actions exactly in the GASLIGHT range (and after starting with Soldiers' Companion and Sword & The Flame I eventually switched to GASLIGHT as my rules of choice.) There are plenty of suitable toys out there for VSF conversions in 15mm. The bonus is that a small scout walker in 28mm can become a towering leviathan in 15mm, provided you disguise any scale giveaways. The figures are much cheaper than 28mm and obviously much easier to carry to and from games. The downsides? Well it's true that the majority of VSF gamers play in 28mm, so unless you're playing solo or have a like-minded gaming group of 15mm enthusiasts, 28mm makes it easier to fit in with other players (if you're lucky enough to live near other GASLIGHTers) The other downside is the lack of suitable character figures in 15mm. GASLIGHT thrives on colourful personalities. Irregular miniatures has a small selection of male and female civilians, and there may be odds and sods available from other manufacturers. But nothing compared to the massive selection available in 28mm. I'm in the middle of switching from 15mm to 28mm GASLIGHT now and will be rebasing my 15s in elements for non-VSF colonial gaming. I still think 15mm is a good choice for VSF, but it was the character figures that made me switch to 28mm. |

D. All of the above. Plus 1/1200. |

Good points guys! 28mm is always going to have a leg up on 15mm because of available detail surface area. The biggest considerations for 15mm for me is; 1. terrain
more of it, choices, less space for storage, etc. 2. those wacky machines
much easier to build constructs and vehicles in the smaller scale. ***** Beyond these points it would be the classic 15mm vs 28mm elements
realistic weapon ranges, ability to include field equipment, etc. So I agree on the benefits of 28mm, but for me it seems that 15mm has more to offer
still on the fence
we shall see :) |

I started out in 20mm, but switched to 28mm for the reasons mentioned above. |

28mm for skirmish and 20mm plastic for the big games. |

28mm all the way. I like working in this scale and converting the different toys and bits that you find to Victorian wonder machines. That is if you can keep them running! |
28mmMan | 28 Jul 2011 11:12 a.m. PST |
I was looking at the plastics available from Victrix and the thought struck me, 54mm as ogre/giant types
the uniforms would still match and if painted in a like fashion would look part of the unit
making the viewer give a double take when the size issue hits home. Anyone including larger scale historical miniatures in their units? link

I find it interesting to show the "ogre" type as other than a great savage brute with uneven/sized teeth, giant watermelon head, and a big gut. The more civilized gentleman look is appealing to me. |

I was thinking about Dr.V's comment about characters been in so short of supply in 20mm. Then I had an idea that if the individual characters are supposed to be heroic then why shouldn't I make them so on the game board? I use 28's for my heroes and main characters. The rest of the extras are after all just so much flotsam any way. Just one guys idea. So I'm in for 20mm for all the above mentions. |
DrVesuvius | 07 May 2013 9:02 a.m. PST |
Since I wrote that (and gave away my 15mm GASLIGHT stuff) several manufacturers have started doing character figures in 15mm. Highlander Studios are doing Space 1889 in 15mm, and Rebel Minis have a very nice looking pack of Steampunk Adventurers. There may well be others out there, plus 15mm pulp and SF ranges that can provide useful figures. It's never been a better time to do VSF in 15mm. Dammit! |
surdu2005 | 08 May 2013 8:44 a.m. PST |
For skirmish games, I prefer the look and feel of 25mm figures. |
kahunna | 08 May 2013 10:47 a.m. PST |
25mm to 28mm. So many large 25's go OK with 28's (at least when looked at from 3ft away like you would on a gaming table) that I mix the two. |
surdu2005 | 09 May 2013 3:06 a.m. PST |
I don't mind mixing 25mm and 28mm figures, particularly for skirmish games. I would be a 25mm figure but others in our gaming group would be 28mm. People do not come in uniform heights. |

I'm having a blast with 1/72 plastics. As I'm doing 19thC Imaginations vs Dollar Store Dinos, it's cheap, fun and quite lovely. -TV |

1/72 has come a long way from the "good old days" of Airfix! I Went all in a while ago and now I am in so deep there is no question of going over to 28MM! By the way Goth I love your stuff! |
