I can't freakin' believe it. I've been gloss and Dullcoting for YEARS in all sorts of weather and it never happened to me before. But, it is extremely humid right now, and maybe I oversprayed the Dullcote a bit…but they are slightly frosted.

Guess I'll try re-glossing them tomorrow in the garage.

Good tips, thanks.

If it's any consolation, Yesterday I just hit some finished buildings with primer instead of gloss coat.

did you bring the minis from a house with AC outside to spray them? if so there was condensation on them, and if the spray can was inside also the temp chance from inside the can to the outside will make problems.

Remember this thread from October?

I've read about frosting for years, but no matter what the humidity (I live in the humid south), it has never actually struck me before. I thought I was invincible.

Remember, kids-- it can happen to YOU.

Happened to me once. But only once. Fortunately. There was the time though, that I sprayed about fifty ACW figs with gray primer instead of dullcote! I just about screamed when the first of the gray mist hit them.

My sympathies, Andy!

Happened to me twice, both times way back in college (when I used to use the fire escape for spraying!); once in high humidity, and once on a very cold day. The Austrian Hussars effected by the humidity ultimately had to be repainted for the most part; good news is they are still in use!

Arrerrrghh! That blows – sorry. :/

Sucks don't it?

I frosted the lozenge on my Pfalz XII -- I have yet to recover.

same here, commission monster for a client, took me ages to get it looking right, sprayed with varnish and it dried like i'd used white undercoat. My heart sank, having to re-do it all from scratch was soul destroying, took me another 10 days to eventually finish it. I'm never, ever, using spray varnish again. ( and if you're reading this Dan, yes, it was your figure!)

That happened to me a few years back…
Now I put all of my minis under a heat lamp (or a spotlight with a 150w halogen bulb) for about 10 min after each coat of sealer.
Never had that problem since.

Sorry. There is nothing more frustrating to have minis ruined by some screw up that was not your fault…

Some products frost at the drop of the proverbial hat. Beware of Krylon's matte sealer for that reason, unless you're doing an Arctic scenario.

laptot22 Jul 2011 9:48 a.m. PST

I heard that a repeat coat under drier conditions causes the problem to go away. Never had froasting problems with Krylon clear coat or their matte sealer.

I also have been known to dullcote in the basement where the humidity is better controled. The amount of spray is negligible and I leave the room until it settles down.

The Gonk22 Jul 2011 10:04 a.m. PST

I resprayed them this morning.

As soon as the gloss hit them, the frost went away. I gave them a fairly light misting and brought them inside quickly, and they looked good.

I let them sit around 10 minutes, then hit them the same way with some Dullcote. They look a lot better now!!

coopman22 Jul 2011 4:09 p.m. PST

I have done this in the past & I don't get too upset now because I have learned from my experiences that if I re-spray them in a less humid environment they will clear up.

Been ther brother, it is a horrible thing to watch your hardwork turn white! I was never able to make mine look completely right.

I bought a dehumidifier for the painting room in the cellar-dry room, no problems with sprays at all.

I laughed at this post until it happened to me!
