Wondering which scale, in model railroading, is used with 28mm figs? This is in regards to buildings.

"O" scale

Thank you . . .

"S" gauge is the closest, however it is generally expensive. You can go down to "HO", which you may want to do if you are fighting "units" or up to "O", which you may want to do with man-to-man type games. "O27" is probably where you want to be. It's really a matter of taste.

Why use railroad buildings when there are scores of companies right in our own little industry providing very nice buildings just for gaming?

Because O scale offers more industrial buildings? Lots of reasons to use O scale, and no resin crap.

I use both, but one reason is that there are very few people making modern buildings for war gaming, Russ. If you want WW2 or earlier, there are tons of things to buy. If you want a modern (1950s+) urban or suburban setting, model railroading is the best place to go. Even then, the choices for recent (let's say 1980s+ stuff) is limited. Miniature Building Authority has a few items (like the Convenience Store), but not much.

I LOVE moderns and science fiction games, including zombie settings. Unfortunately, unless you scratch build the stuff, you have very few good building choices in 28mm.

Nothing more beautiful and substantial then a resin and/or foam building on a table -- just classy stuff!! In my oponion anyway.

Depends. Do you use buildings to the figures scale or ground scale? I use 20mm-ish buildings for 25mm, 'cause if I use 25/28mm buildings figures inside the building sometimes can't fire from one end to the other! Got to compromise.

On30 scale (tough to find…)
S Scale is closest for 28mm, IMO.
O Scale does not look right to me, as the doors are either too thin or too tall for my 28mm figs…
But O Scale might work for you.

Just an option… try these…

And if you are an Old Glory member, the costs come down an BUNCH!
They are resin, but might have some airbubles in the casts (mine did…), but I made it a fun chore to do while I was watching Cricket on the telly…

S is the best match scale wise, and a good choice for larger formation games. But those are small niche kits and aren't cheap.

I prefer O scale buildings for skirmish gaming. WIth individual 28mm figures on bases which make them taller, plus with arms and weapons sticking out at various angles and heights -- the figures look like they could actually fit through the doorways on O buildings!

Also, model railroad buildings tend to have much smaller footprints than their actual counterparts to leave more room on the table for trains. So again for skirmish gaming, O buildings take up a better footprint.

And Plasticville is cheap.

On30 and American O scale are both 1:48, S is 1:64 and 1:56 is often thrown around as being 28mm so pick your poison.

Also the Plasticville stuff was intended to be compatible with both S and O so works better than 1:48 O scale.

Here's a picture though – be your own judge. It's a Walther 1:48 structure with two Brigade Games models.

It might just be me, but the 1:48 Walthers building looks way too big to use with those figures. I'd definitely recommend either S gauge or 1:72 buildings.

skyking2022 Jul 2011 6:36 a.m. PST

O scale is about 1:48 and is better suited for 40mm figures (speaking generally). S scale buildings are better for 28mm. Yet sometime it depends on the building so a figure for comparison is always good to have.

BTW if you look closely I think the WH Legands of the Old West Rule book has a picture with a couple of HO scale buildings alongside 28mm figures!

Go S scale in the U.S.Or in Europe you can buy S spur on Ebay Germany or go with Brigade games s scale trains it is the best scale for 28mm. As well a Plasticville S scale buildings and Ertle cow town 1/64 scale buildings. Hope this helps

richarDISNEY29 Jul 2011 8:50 a.m. PST

Yea. The "O" scale doors look all wrong to me…

I alway judge a building by the door versus the figure height taking into consideration the base thickness.

I want to do OW in both 28mm and 40mm (28s because I have them, 40s because I don't-sound familar?) So I am evaluating buildings that can work for both. Oh and I am also doing Pony Wars in 15mm!

Another thought on using model RR buildings is that some of them require quite a bit of assembly time.
