Beans for breakfast? Insanity. Bushs Baked Beans are pretty good, original. I dont like all the others. Generally I am not a big bean fan. Well actually, I dont mind the beans but then the wife will complain all night

It's a fairly recent development How recent do you mean? As a kid, when we could get them, we had them for Sunday breakfast. There was a war on so we couldn't get a full breakfast very often but when we did it wasn't any different than today's. x42 |

I'm a bit strange with my likes of baked beans Asda's "Value" baked beans are my chose. I don't know why but I prefer them to any of the quality brands. x42 |

Beans for breakfast a recent development ?!?!? My Dad's mom was the daughter of an immigrant from the UK (back in the 1880's). Gran served beans over toast for a quick and hearty (and cheap !) breakfast ! Her beans were home-made and delicious ! G-grandmother's recipe and breakfast tradition ! As to beans, in general – I love 'em, and they're especially good served with a garnish (or a shed-load) of chopped onion ! |

The best local option for canned beans
Normally I cook two pounds of dried beans (pintos or black-eyed peas) in a pressure cooker bi-weekly for the family. Onions, local chow-chow or my own tart BBQ sauce recipe are the most popular accompaniments. While ketchup on beans is popular regionally, nobody in our family eats them with ketchup. |

@Terrement You made my day. Bushs for me too. Be very careful of cave beans or Anasazi beans. They don't make you flatulent. They were the beans eaten by the Anasazi people, a vanished tribe of Native Americans. Coincidence? |

Take about six cans of beans (Bushs are fine), toss in half a cup of molasses, half a cup of ketchup and about a pound of bacon (cook the bacon first), put it in the slow cooker for about ten hours – mmmmm, heaven! |

B & M, made here in Maine, USA. Especially in the glass jar. We do beans as part of breakfast here as well. Available in many a restaurant at breakfast time. Try a spot of dry mustard added when you cook them. |

Home made, Boston baked beans with a good dollop of molasses in the sauce to bring out the flavour. I've found using pancetta rather than ham or bacon gives th best flavouring overall but does make for a rather expensive version. |

You get baked beans from a 275-degree oven where beans, onions, brown sugar, molasses, rum, salt pork, and a couple of secret ingredients have been getting acquainted in a ceramic pot for 8 hours or more. You don't open a can! Or a bottle or whatever. O tempora! O mores! Baked beans, fried eggs, scrapple, fried mush. If that doesn't get you ready for the day, you must be dead or from California. LT |

For British baked beans, Crosse & Blackwell used to make the best. The brand vanished some time in the 80s or 90s. It has now reappeared as part of the Branston empire, and althpugh they are the beans I buy, I am not convinced that these are the beans of yesteryear. I don't know which manufacturer(s) made beans for the compo ration packs, but for a healthy 19-year old, a tin of compo bangers & beans with an oatmeal block and a wet of tea was the best breakfast in the world after two or three section attacks in the fresh air to give you an appetite. Nowadays, being a larger fellow of more demanding tastes, my favourite bean dish is cassoulet. Not really a breakfast food, but duck cassoulet is my favourite, and I'd even advise Sussex spicy chipolatas from the Horsham delicatessen in place of Toulouse sausages. I have a rather good cassoulet from a wargaming pal who has researched the matter thoroughly. It begins with an historical note on the origins of the dish at the siege of Castelnaudaray, and concludes with the advice "serve with a robust red wine such as Fitou, and retire to a well-ventilated room".
