Working on Impetus Navalis rules, I have to decide the kind of base I want to use. So please, have a look at this and help me: link What do you think? Rectangular or ship-shaped? Cheers! |

I would suggest you go with a rectangular base with enough room at the end to hold some basic info about the ship (type / name). Ship models with rigging can be fragile and using a rectangular base makes it easier for player to move the ship by touching the base rather then the model. I use these types of bases for my 1/1200 Napoleonic and 1/2400 WWI naval models, as you can see in the link below: link I've tried "ship shaped" bases and found they lead to model more model wear and tear. I hope that helps Miles |

Hi Miles! Rectangular bases were my firts option for the same arguments. However, ancient galley combat is not shooting but ramming and boarding so contact between ships is extremely important and I think that the result it΄s not visually acceptable using rectangular bases. Cheers! |

I like your version three as it makes it easier to model ramming attacks. You might want to square off the aft portion if you need to place ship information on the stand. Plus it would simply be easier to make. I think version four would be confusing from a distance as to what direction is forward and which aft. |

@jdpintex Agree with you. There must be a 6th version, using # front and #1 aft. Thank you! |

I agree with jdpintex. We used something similar for some club-developed WWII naval rules, with an angled front and a square aft. The angle on the front varied according to the type of ship, and could therefore be used to represent the allowable angle of turn. As I recall, it saved a bit of messing around with turning templates, especially in multi-player games. On a different note, I was admiring the work on the ships on your site a week or so ago, and was wondering what colour/brand of paint you used for the unpainted wood – they look terrific. |

Well my initial thoughts [seeing all 5 example in line] was for #1 [but that's mainly my OCD kicking in] and I liked the space at the rear for the name Having read further I agree that an angled bow makes more sense from a visual ramming perspective. So I think I'd vote for no 5 you get a nice straight ram with the option to have the angled rams and space for the ship name [so bit of all worlds there] In terms of the bases being irregularly sized and thus difficult to get these days I cheat and get mine from warbases.co.uk Martin will gladly cut any size and shape you need and for the price he charges in 2mm MDF I can't buy card for the same amount let alone factor in the time required to cut them out [old age problem time poor cash rich well relatively speaking] Good luck with the project [and you never know it might encourage me to find my ancient galleys

Hi guys! Really appreciate your comments, thank you very much. Finally we will leave the choice of base type to the player (the rules are compatible with most types), but there are two recommendations: the rectangular one, being the most frequent; and, as proposed by jdpintex, a mix of options 1 and 3. Cheers! |
