I need a bit of research help. As most of you know I have been working on a painting of USS Texas which will be auctioned to raise funds for that ship's restoration team. Its almost finished and progress paintings are available for viewing on the Houston Beer and Pretzels wargames site. However at this finishing off stage I have come across an enormous amount of conflicting information that is making it difficult to finish the painting off to fine detail. The ship is depicted escorting the convoy to invade North Africa. I have two versions of the paint scheme she was supposed to be wearing at that time. I have about three or four versions of what her AA armament was at the time. According to those I consider the most reliable, she was still fitted with quad 1.1" mounts, a single aft and various others amidships and forward. The quad 40mm mounts not replacing them until after the invasion of North Africa. And two quad 40mm mounts replacing the single quad 1.1" mount aft. YET
I have photographs that clash. However those that clash show a different paint scheme too. Dates are all over the place. I suspect that some of the photo captions and dates are wrong and have two of the same photo with different dates and information! Does anyone have a view of USS Texas DURING the North African invasion, or while escorting the convoy to it????? It may seem trivial to some, but I do like to have every detail correct if possible and in this case the differences are quite dramatic visually. |

One of the things to remember is that a lot of 'official' photos would have been deliberately older for the given date, so Pic of USS TExas released for press use might show her a year older than the Torch op the pic is be used with. They might also have had certain details removed amended etc. ALl I can suggest is try and find Torch pics with other things in shot so you can nail down the where and when. |

IIRc that AA refit did not happen until months after the North African campaign. There was one refit before Torch that reduced some of her AA (the 5 inchers I think), but I don't think the Quad 40s happened until '43 |

Brilliant stuff. Love it. The anti-tank gun diorama is particularly well done. I like the completeness of it, including the inclusion of the carrier. And, as an aside, erm, Scots ARE Brits. |

Any photo of TEXAS during the North African invasion that allows me to see her paint scheme will enable me to match it with a whole range of larger photographs I have and thus be able to determine the fine detail. The problem is I cant seem to find any of her during the invasion. Even a distant shot would do if I can pick out the paint scheme. |

OK, deep breath, stepped away from the keyboard and now I'm OK. Mal, do you have the photos dated 19 August 1942, which show her just out of the Norfolk Navy yard in the Measure 12 scheme? I have them in the Leeward Publications book on the Texas. I also have the Classic Warships Publishing book, but I suspect that you are familiar with all those already. There is a good website at: bb35library.usstexasbb35.com but even his pictures are of the August 19 1942 refit. I have seen no pictures of her during NA camapign, but several right around that time. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help. BWW |

Not that I know anything, but in the site BrianW linked to link shows "not aboard" for 40mm during Torch. link supports it, saying the 40mm went aboard in the June 1943 refit. Off topic, but the Normandy war diary lists one of the targets on June 15 as "house." Ummm

Wonderful Thanks guys. With the above links I can easily hammer it down to match the large detailed photographs I have. No doubt about what she carried for the North African invasion now. I'll have to make a few changes to the painting, but that's fine. Its strange how one can search and search on line and yet come up with different links to someone else! I thought I had found just about everything, but obviously not! |
