Is there one manufacturer which can be considered the best?

My vote would be for Bay Area Yards. Oh, wait: this is a TMP Poll Suggestion? Never mind. Disregard.

Bay Area Yards has a good selection and it's different from Thoroughbred, but I like Thoroughbred's ships the best. I do use BAY rules, though.

There are what – THREE – manufacturers of 1:600 ironclads and you want us to choose which is BEST?

Ironclads – Thoroughbred

Everything else – Bay Area Yards. ('cause thanks to them I can rock my need to field the Minnesota!)

Good point, G Dog. Thoroughbred does ironclads, BAY does sailing ships of the period and many other ships that Throughbred doesn't do. I believe Peter Pig is the other manufacturer? I don't think I've ever looked at their offerings for ironclads.

Even though there are only three, it is still helpful to know, for those of us that haven't seen any of them, or heard about them.

I only know that Thoroughbred are excellent models and that Toby Barrett does thorough research on them! So, they are very accurate!

I would rank them Thoroughbred, Bay, and Peter Pig a distant third. Between them the naval aspect of the ACW is pretty well covered.

Thoroughbred.

Thoroughbred best (especially ironclads)
Bay Area (extremely close second), who covers everything else.

Actually very little overlap between the two. And I use both.

Peter Pig a very distant 3rd.

I agree. Thoroughbred are probably the best. In part my feeling for this is that they are cast metal while the only Bay Area I have are resin. Im not a resin fan. But, Bay as stated makes a lot of stuff you cannot get from Thoroughbred. I only have two of Peter Pigs ships. They are OK but not of the quality of the other two makers. I would not hesitate to put Thoroughbred and Bay on the same table. Im not quite so sure about Peter Pig.

I have both Thoroughbred and Peter Pig. The Thoroughbred have nice detail and the Peter Pig have excellent price. I have found that on the table they look similar, but that could be a reflection of my painting skill or lack there of. ?:)

I only use Thoroughbred for my 1:600 River Wars games, but my houses and accessories are from Bay and Simply 6 / Pico Armor.

Thoroughbred. And they paint up so well that even someone as bad at it as I can produce something that looks quite good.

And if I knew how to post a photo I'd show you!
