How do you guys like this look?
Source: link I REALLY wish someone would make 15mm cloaked Martians like the one in that last picture. And look at this one too (not Mars, but very Martian in feel):
Source (not sure who the artist was though): link link Anyway, I've made a couple of attempts at getting a similar Martian landscape: link link link QUESTION: Has anyone else here tried to make a similar Martian landscape and ruins, whatever the scale? I'm interested particularly in how you made and painted your ruins. Thanks, Dan PS. By the way, it was Dampfpanzerwagon who first made me aware of Jeff Carlisle's work and Legion 4 who rekindled my appreciation of those illustrations: TMP link TMP link |

I attempted a cliffside ruin once upon a time, inspired by the Martian Chronicles illustrations. Here you go:

Good God, Glenn! That is awesome. Is that foamboard? Are those stalagmites foam too? Impressive size too! My mini Abu Simbel-like wall looks puny by comparison:
So, being so little, I better not cover them with dunes, like I had planned:
Your arches are definitely un-Earthly. A combination of Hobbit with Moorish in look. I love them! Did you make a separate table for the interior? I'm going to make an interior hall of sorts:
Hey, check out the entrance to this "tomb":
Except this would be more like it for the statues against the wall:
Though a giant face looking to the skies might still be an option for a later project, like Matakishi did here:
Thanks, Dan |

That Martian House is pretty cool, though it would be a big dead spot on a board due to all the slopes. Make it a ruin or make the roof a separate piece and you might be able to reclaim some of that space. |
Cacique Caribe | 27 Jun 2011 4:59 p.m. PST |
Good point. A lift-off roof would be a must. Dan |
Glenn M | 27 Jun 2011 5:10 p.m. PST |
I didn't do interiors. The rule was if you entered during your movement the next turn you would appear in an entrance of your choice with no more movement. It is blue insulation board with thick plaster all over it. Yeah, it's huge, too huge. It'll likely hit the trash someday. I like it, but it isn't practical. |
Cacique Caribe | 27 Jun 2011 5:42 p.m. PST |
Wait a minute, Glenn! Don't trash it. Is there any way to make two out of it? Dan |
Legion 4 | 27 Jun 2011 6:18 p.m. PST |
Hey !!! I love those Carlisle pics and that last pic(labelled Varisia Ruins IIRC
)!! I wish someone would do something like those !! |
Cacique Caribe | 27 Jun 2011 6:26 p.m. PST |
Well, Legion 4, you are the man that has put me back on track. I've been considering so many other projects, yet making very little headway in any of them. However, I have resolved to get back to my Mars board and finish up the cork hills and Martian monuments. I must complete that first before diving into anything else. So, thank you Sir! Dan |

And look at this one too (not Mars, but very Martian in feel): The cloak on the first one is better. The rain would run straight off that bald head and down the neck of the second one! Nice terrain. |

Ya know, if I had somewhere to store a huge Martian table like the Martian Chronicles art, I'd build one in a heartbeat, that or I had a buyer prepared ahead of time. Currently, life would not allow me to make something so amazing with my current space limitations. |
Cacique Caribe | 19 Aug 2011 7:08 a.m. PST |
Glenn, There must be a way to may such a thing, like the Martian Chronicles canyon monuments, collapsible and easy to store, isn't there? I'm thinking of starting from the space I still have available in the largest of my empty storage containers, and work my way from there. Must give this some thought and do some sketches though. Dan |
Cacique Caribe | 05 Sep 2011 11:34 p.m. PST |
Glenn, I think that you got it right, though. Having the ruins cut out of the main cliff side is definitely the way to go, as can be seen by this Earthly example:

I think I may have found the perfect face for my Martian Colossi:
TMP link This is what I have right now:
link link What do you think? Thanks, Dan |
Glenn M | 25 Oct 2011 11:33 a.m. PST |
My thoughts are you should be casting and selling them. Truth be told though, I liked the old faces better though, they were a bit more foreign and alien to me. Though these likely have more uses. |
Cacique Caribe | 25 Oct 2011 11:44 a.m. PST |
Glenn, Are you saying this is the face you prefer?
Or the very, very first ones I started with, way back when?
linkThanks, Dan |
Glenn M | 25 Oct 2011 11:48 a.m. PST |
The very first ones when you first started.
But the new bodies look much better. Then you could always cast the heads separate from the bodies and have a pick your own sorta thing. |
Cacique Caribe | 25 Oct 2011 11:55 a.m. PST |
Hmm. Great idea! Thanks, Dan |
Glenn M | 25 Oct 2011 1:16 p.m. PST |
CC, If you ever start casting these, please let me know, I'd love to get some in plaster. I think plaster would be best as it allows them to be easily damaged and rubbled. Also adding cracks and such would be a lot easier (not to mention safer) with the plaster. I may even be convinced to do a Martian game board, not that I need it in any way. |
Cacique Caribe | 25 Oct 2011 2:23 p.m. PST |
I will definitely let you know! Thanks, Dan |

I'm thinking of placing a couple of Egyptian-style pylons or Nubian-style (pointier) pyramids in the area. Nothing as big as these, of course:

That Mars Pyramid pic reminds me a lot of the old 1964 film with astronauts finding Selenite ruins on the Moon, in the process of collapsing. Dan PS. This is funny, but might provide fuel for more gaming scenarios: link |
Space Aardvark | 26 Oct 2011 3:59 a.m. PST |
If I recall there are cheapo egyptian statuary for sale in the British Museum shop, a bit of green stuff and you could have a fairly decent Martian monument. I'm planning to do a mini campaign with powerful robot tomb guardians and the sarcophogi of ancient Star Gods. My adventurers will be after bits of advanced tech to swipe. Assuming they get out alive. |
Glenn M | 01 Nov 2011 10:01 a.m. PST |
So I am thinking about making a 2x2 martian cliff board that can disassembled for storage. The piece will be done in an overall L shape, but with layers that come off an pull out to allow internal access. You'll only have maybe 2.5 square feet of actual board space on the flat area in front, but the cliffs should provide a fair amount more space. I am thinking about using a pile of Rare Earth magnets to clip the components into place, so that you can swiftly remove and replace objects without them moving about too much when there is weight on them. The back panel will have supports along the sides that keep it from shifting and have it interlock to the main portion in a few locations, once again, magnets for reinforcement. It'd like to make it so the ground panel and the cliff panel actually stack in such a way to allow more to be stored directly on top. I'll also need some money to buy a Praesentia force from CMG . . . CC, for future reference, I hate you, a lot. You got this stuck in my head and I can't break it out. |

The only martian stuff I've built for ground use is this fort in 28mm:
all here linkIt was mastered by me in pink foam and then cast in resin to get the eight sides with the tower, entrance way and stair wells built separately. Doors are from an ex GW Mighty fortress spue that I had squirreled away for almost 20 years

John, That is absolutely stunning! Love all the other pics on that link. By the way, what is that building across from the tower, seen here in the foreground?
Dan |
John Treadaway | 23 Jun 2012 1:48 p.m. PST |
Thanks dan The bit opposite the main tower on the fort is a gun platform. Idea is a large gun sits on the front part and behind it is a (timber floored) top of the ammunition lift tower to keep it supplied. If I rememebr correctly, the shots of the whole thing 'together' like that show not all of the segments finished – the tower has none of the imbedded cannon posts and not all of the paint jobs have been finished. In that last shot you posted, the piece with the vine growing up against the wall (closest to the camera) and the terracotta looking tiled stripe is one in a finished state, as is the one two clockwise from that – all the others were in a half painted state. The rest of the shots on the site show it finished (with some real Mars photoshopped into the background) John T |
