I received a very generous gift in the post the other day. I have been hunting after dismounted French dragoons for several years now and had made some progress with the Strelets set, but one of the members here sent me a packet of Der Kriegspieler dismounted dragoons and some Minifig officers. I think my troop of mounted and dismounted dragoons is going to become a reality. For those who'd like to see some comparison shots, you can find them here. link |

Interesting, I am looking for foot dragoons in 28mm so I can have one dismounted squadron to go with the two mounted ones. I'm using Elite so I guess I will have to do some head swapping for reasons of size. Would a dismounted dragoon have worn the boots or would he have worn low shoes and gaiters? |

That depends, are you refering to dismounted dragoons or dragoons that are mounted, but that are fighting dismounted for the moment? |

What about the Perry plastic dragoon set there are mounted and dismounted figures inside?! |

Well, basically I need 1805 era dragoons in dismounted mode. AFAIK, in 1805 most dragoon regiments had one squadron dismounted due to lack of horses, a situation prgressively corrected after Austerlitz and Jena. These guys were used to defend the rear areas, baggage trains etc. I am assuming that, since they were pretty much dedicated to ground-pounding, they would have been equipped accordingly. I would guess therefore that they wouldn't have worn the cavalry jackboots, which seem clumsy for foor soldiers. I could be wrong and in fact I don't know what they would have worn if it wasn't jackboots. Maybe they had an issue of infantry footwear? |

Several illustrations show foot dragoons with trousers or the standard long infantry gaiters. |

Redoubt has 10 dismounted French Dragoons including a horseholder, drummer and even an elite company figure in a bearskin. |

Yes, the dismounted dragoons wore gaitors in the 1806 campaign. I believe that they were attached to the Guard division during the campaign. |

forgive my ignorance (the last time I worried was when i was a teenager and I had my Minifigs) but would a normal French infantrymand serve, with head swap for one of the delightful Italeri dragoon heads? I appreciate a dismounted cavalryman would have different equipment, but the 1805/6 guys I always assumed had been kitted out as footsloggers waiting to capture some kit. I will bow to far better knowledge than mine of course. |
