On a scale of 0 (terrible) to 10 (perfect), how would you rate BoardGameGeek? boardgamegeek.com

Ambush Alley Games21 Jun 2011 9:35 a.m. PST

The folks there seem genuinely interested in discussing games and there's not a huge noise to signal ratio. I really need to spend more time over there!

Shawn.

9 – I don't go there often, but I always find useful info when I do.

9 in 2003-2006. 7 now.
excellent, helpful crowd, and lots of useful information, but some odd organizational choices and annoying ads.

9 its a lot easier to get around search and you can track and subscribe topics inline images and so forth.

I've done my bit and created entries for miniatures rulessets and linked and referred people back here

It doesnt soak up anywhere near as much of my tie due to its granular subscription and notification system.. did I mention that?

I'd give BGG a 10 if it had a dawghouse

no wait.

jameshammyhamilton21 Jun 2011 10:48 a.m. PST

As a general resource for boardgames it has to be a 10

For wargaming by which I take this to mean the American version of wargaming which does not use miniatures then it is an 8 or 9.

Sir Fearing Pangborn21 Jun 2011 10:52 a.m. PST

8 It's a lot better than ConsimWorld, which is mainly an 'old boys club'. If they don't know you, you're largely ignored.

Paintbeast21 Jun 2011 11:02 a.m. PST

I try to avoid it, checking out other reviews first. The information is generally helpful but it loads slowly for me (rural home, awful satellite ISP) and is such a riot of generally useless clutter that it is far more likely to crash while loading than other sites.

Prior to moving away from the city and a nifty cable ISP (or even phone company DSL) I checked it more often.

PygmaelionAgain21 Jun 2011 11:04 a.m. PST

I'd give it a 7, but only because of that front page.

If I go there looking for a specific game, it gets full marks.

If I do there trying to catch up on new reviews or releases, it's a sargasso sea of posts.

T Andrews21 Jun 2011 12:14 p.m. PST

8-9, use it all the time.

The Monstrous Jake21 Jun 2011 12:23 p.m. PST

They do list me (blush) and several of my designs, but truthfully I rarely look at BoardGameGeek unless I'm looking up a specific boardgame.

They do have an increasing number of miniatures rulesets though, so that's a good thing.

I'm not keen on all the extra clutter. Makes it hard for my old eyes to read.

So, overall I'd give it an 8.

8.5 as if you need questions answered, errata, mods, playsheets, etc., it is an invaluable resource. Not as stuffy as Consimworld and if you think the Napoleonics board here is bad, there can be nasty discussions about historical board games as well.

THE best resource for board games on the net.
I wish the forums were more like TMP.

Agent 1321 Jun 2011 1:56 p.m. PST

How so, Inari?

Andrew May121 Jun 2011 2:00 p.m. PST

I've never really gotten past the front page. However, all the high marks here may just make me dig a teeny bit deeper…

Bob Applegate21 Jun 2011 2:04 p.m. PST

8ish

Sundance21 Jun 2011 2:05 p.m. PST

I think the concept rates a 9, but the execution is a 5 – very unwieldy and it's difficult to find anything on it unless you know the specific name of the game.

I agree with Sundance. Great info but a bit tricky to navigate unless you know what you are looking for. Very useful files, though.

@Suburban Astronaut

I think its the members that make the site with thousands of reviews for games you can really find one that you will like, not by reading the good reviews but by reading the bad.

I if you have even heard of a game there is more then a good chance you will find an entry on it.

If you want a game there are LOTS of people who are willing to part with their copy. It might cost you money or a good game but there is a way to get the game you are looking for.

Also where else on the net can you find a QRS for almost any game?

It's a great site for gaming.

Given up for good21 Jun 2011 3:10 p.m. PST

I would give it an 8 for information, 6 for pictures but a 3 for layout

Too many adds, poor link structure and flashing, sliding pictures turn me off!

Lions Den21 Jun 2011 3:44 p.m. PST

It is the Chuck Norris of board game sites.

I don't use the forums, though at one time I did register. I occasionally read the forum links for a particular entry. They're okay; it's hard to know how much credit to give various reviewers, as the quality of an individual review can vary widely.
So a 5 for that part of it.

As an information resource on specific boardgames it's the best place on the web. If I want to know about a game, maybe see pictures of the components and whatnot, I go to BGG. If I want to find variant files, etc., it's great for that, too. And I'll often wind up just clicking around a bit and stumbling on games I've never heard of before thanks to the various lists and comments, or even the left-hand "what's hot" column.

So I've got to rate it a 10 for that.

Overall, call it an 8.
