So Cassino will include a hero bear for the Poles that allows increase ROF and also to allow units to re-roll failed motivation test. Wow! Who knew power of bears? Imagine how bad all those mules, horses and humans that toted ammo must feel, being put to shame by a bear! And all those officers whose ability to inspire their troops is shown up by the Polish bear. Well, maybe it is not too far out, considering the power of musical instruments, dancing and screaming in the FOW universe! |

"And all those officers whose ability to inspire their troops is shown up by the Polish bear." Almost all the Quartermaster Corps officers I have known in the Army--from 2LT platoon leader to LTC battalion commander--could easily have been outperformed in their jobs by a trained bear. Be thankful they haven't researched his Nazi counterpart: picture Allen |

I'm not surprised. Everybody knows the sheer awesomeness of bears: picture ***Warning: strong language*** |

Can you spend points to equip him with an "infectous bite" or "elongated claws"? Maybe the bear can carry a standard that will ward off all shells under 100mm and cause fear in non-furry mammals. I've seen this movie somewhere before

That is very very Warhammery I must say – I didn't realise the Free Beer I mean BEAR had that much of a game effect. But I agree that I have met Supply managers in many walks of life whose replacement by a bear would be the excuse for a party. Pat |

Unlike some of BF's characters this one is based on a real Bear – whats your problem he carried the ammo what did you do? Also he is nicer Wojtek Vs Remer – let me think |
Anatoli | 07 Jun 2011 4:18 a.m. PST |
As I wrote in the other Cassino thread, I like Wojtek the soldier bear. I think it was a completely crazy thing of the Polish soldiers to adopt a bear cub and enlist him into their ranks, taking it with them on their campaigns and finally to the UK. I mean, would such a thing even be possible today? Imagine a group of guys from any army in modern times happening on a bear, you think anyone would be "Lets feed him beer and cigarettes (true story) and let him ride in our trucks like the bear in the Borat movie" HAHA? That is so awesome that it never fails to make me smile. However, I think it was a bit too much if BF gave the artillery increased Rate of Fire based on the bear alone. He did carry crates of ammo up and down Monte Cassine but I don't know – seems like quite a stretch that he would have supplied enough to allow for such an interpretation. I think he should have remained an off table morale boost , you could have bought him like air support, just a static value in your army organization for some sort of once per game reroll. Btw, those pictures Starfury linked to really made me LOL :D

I will keep playing FOW and just ignore their foray into RPG land. Since I never use their characters anyway it's not much of a change. |
VonBurge | 07 Jun 2011 5:36 a.m. PST |
It's just effects being modeled
if one does not like the idea of a bear being the cause of these enhancements then one can use the same "upgrade" and replace the bear with something he feel's is more suitable
like an insprirational commander. |
John the OFM | 07 Jun 2011 6:41 a.m. PST |
It jumped the shark with Fallschirmjaeger Necromancers. Just ignore like that and play on. I used to rationalize the magical powers of musicians in WFB by saying they are a visual reminder of (points spent on) training and are a handy reminder of that unit's training. Until I read the actual bear rules, I will hold back on justifying it. Possibly I cannot, so why go out on a limb? |
BullDog69 | 07 Jun 2011 9:04 a.m. PST |
Are we perhaps taking the benefits of the bear a little two literally? Is the point not rather that the Poles can have an artillery unit which is better than average? I'm no fan of FOW, but the way I read this is as a (fairly silly) way to have an artillery unit with unusually high esprit d'corps / coordination / morale – in which case, I see no massive problem with it. If the bear, however, is a 'unit' of its own that can wander about and attack people, then I agree it seems a little far-fetched. |

It's a little fiddly, the hands and staff are separate. I just put a little kicker on the figure and glue on the staff and that made things a little easier. |

Yeah it is kind of sad and boring stuff like the Wojtek story won't happen again. I can only imagine all the hilarity and borderline madness surrounding the bear and the unit that adopted it. "Hey guys look I found a bear!" "Cool! Let's keep him!" "Yeah!" "Damn righ we are!" "Let him ride in our truck" "Feed him cigarettes and beer" "You know what, lets wrestle with it – see what it's made of" "Damn now we need to get him a soldier ID to bring him along with us" "I wonder if we can teach him how to carry ammo crates?" Imagine being a quartermaster for that outfit. Must have been a logistical nightmare hahaha! You can read a more detailed account of the bear and his service here: wojtek-soldierbear.weebly.com This particular part made me grin widely :D
"He had observed his comrades who continually loaded and unloaded heavy shells and boxes with ammunition. At one moment the bear walked toward a supply truck on his hind legs, stretched out his paws and waited for the soldiers to give him something to carry. To their amazement, Wojtek effortlessly lifted a heavy box of ammunition and carried it from one truck to another and returned for more. Filled with enthusiasm, the bear marched day after day and carefully carried vital supplies until the Polish soldiers took Monte Cassino. Astonishingly, Wojtek was so careful that he never dropped a single shell, food sack or box with ammunition. " |

Didn't we have a "FoW jumped the Shark" thread last month? Why yes, yes they did. TMP link I think Troy from the current sitcom Community said it best: "Happy Days had an episode where Fonzi really did jump a shark
and it was awesome!" |

Didn't we have a "FoW jumped the Shark" thread last month? Almost six months ago. And that was before the bear. We've had at least five "I'll never buy miniatures from a company that doesn't put pictures on their website" threads since then. |
