Okay so which historical period do you find yourself
fudging the most on accuracy.
For example: You might sniff at using WWII figs to game
WWI, but have no problem using Late Romans to fight
Carthaginians in a Punic Campaign.

I have to admit that I pretty much will gloss
over a lot of accuracy when doing Medievals.

All of them to a greater or less degree quoth Ace. Verily.

Prehistory and then Ancients

Napoleonics

Grand Duke Natokina01 Jun 2011 5:15 p.m. PST

I do pretty much only WWII where Valiant and Revell British are standing in for Canadians.

John the OFM01 Jun 2011 5:32 p.m. PST

I give far too many rifles to figures in FIW skirmish than reality would or should allow.
But, everybody likes the rules for rifles in Fire and Steel, and besides, they are wearing RIFLE SHIRTS!!!

In AWI regimental level games, as for unit identity, I am pretty anal in that I paint up the unit as "correctly" or "historically accurate" as I can. But if I do not have the 2nd battalion of Guards, the 64th Foot gets pulled out.
My Hessians have been brunswickers, and fusilier hats vs tricornes bother me not. As long as they look like Krauts, they go on the table.

I have used Huns for Tartars and Cossacks.

And in WW2, one Sid Kafizz is as good as another as far as our group is concerned. It is what I say it is.

Ron W DuBray01 Jun 2011 5:43 p.m. PST

all because there have been no aliens walking armor monsters or zombies in history but they seem to get into my games. :)

Saxondog01 Jun 2011 7:26 p.m. PST

Dark ages a lot. I don't care if that German tribesman and the eastern steppe riders didn't go as a team, they might work well on the table.

Napoleonics in a small fashion. Many figure companies don't make multiple uniforms of the same troops so 1805 and 1815 wear the same on the table. Sometimes, the same for Japanese figures.

Medievals. I've been known to use 13th century figures for 14th and 15th…

Who asked this joker01 Jun 2011 8:25 p.m. PST

I'll fudge any period but try to stay close. I am not a button counter or a color nazi when it comes to uniforms for example. I paint in a reasonable Hollywood style.

I use 1/72 plastic AWI for all my colonist vs American Indian games (well except Norse vs American Indians) and WW2 for Korea. Admittedly the last isn't a huge leap but since the question was asked…

Ancients, particualrly for 'barbarian horde' types.

Horse & Musket (WSS & Napoleonics).

Anything in mail tends to get used pretty broadly although I try and make it accurate to the Third Crusade.

Our VSF games on Mars get pretty unhistoric. One of our group actually fields Martians with blue hair.

Shaun Travers02 Jun 2011 4:20 a.m. PST

Ancients and Medieval I will fudge if I have to but only with something close-ish (well, IMO anyway) or just cannot bring myself to do it. But won't do this for any other period. Interesting question.

TodCreasey02 Jun 2011 5:47 a.m. PST

Anceints and medieval as well usually due to figure availability

David Manley02 Jun 2011 6:06 a.m. PST

Ancients and Medieval, followed by Spanish Civil War

Scorpio02 Jun 2011 6:12 a.m. PST

I want my cavemen fighting dinosaurs, just like they did when they founded America.

religon02 Jun 2011 6:21 a.m. PST

HYW.

I am just uninterested in the figures, but like the history. I use figures from as much as 200 years out of period.

I suppose Napoleonics since the battles tend to be so huge I may have Russians standing in for Nassauers, or in the case of an early war game say, "imagine all these guys in bicornes." After that, 20th century naval. "Today appearing as HMS Arethusa is, uh, let's use HMS Ajax."

richarDISNEY02 Jun 2011 7:35 a.m. PST

WW2 -- we like to either play out fictional battles, or play Weird War 2…

Or AWI -- we add zombies, witches and daemons to our games.

All of them. Life's too short

BlackKnight02 Jun 2011 9:04 a.m. PST

I think it's fair to say that very little is known for certain about most ancient armies. At least half of what we are doing is fantasy, from the colors of their shields to the formations they used in battle. Anyone who thinks differently is kidding themselves just a bit.

Rudysnelson02 Jun 2011 11:17 a.m. PST

Fudging accuracy! Never it is HERESEY!

Omemin03 Jun 2011 6:45 a.m. PST

I try to be as accurate as I can with my fudge, as otherwise it fails to set.

I have had to "guesstimate" in all periods at points, and have found more conflicting sources than I care to think about. I guess it all comes down to fudging at some point.

Don Featherstone made that point about using a game scale to write rules, I think.

Dasher06 Jun 2011 11:46 a.m. PST

None, intentionally.
I'm sure I screw up the accuracy all the time, but I don't mean to.
