Yes, very nice AAR! Great looking game. |

Terrific looking game. I love the use of actual terrain rather than a flat boring tabletop. (walking away mumbling to himself "how can you have a Syrian war without Syrian chariots? What the hell is this world coming to? And Stewart is on the internet on Saturday but won't talk to his friends except on his lunch hour at work during the week. What the hell is this world coming to? mumble grumble") |

"I love the use of actual terrain rather than a flat boring tabletop." Most battles in antiquity will be on the flat boring side
this particular game lends itself to a higher density of terrain. JJ |

Dropping a fly in the ointment here, I can't get the OOB link to work. Is there anywhere else to look this up? As for that other image, irreversibly scarred & intrigued in equal measure. |
| JJartist | 21 May 2011 2:42 p.m. PST |
Yes the OOB link is clogged
. stay tuned

Yours and Paul's Battle reports are always enjoyable reading. |

Great stuff as always, Jeff. BTW, have you ever done Sellasia? I'd like to see a good scenario for that one. Regards, Dean |
| JJartist | 23 May 2011 12:31 p.m. PST |
I don't really have models for a Sellasia game
I reckon we could use surrogates for the Spartan phalanx. It's tough too since the Spartan position was compromised, and their counter attack was a bit desperate. One could focus on the pre-battle, and maybe have the Spartan left wing defeat the Antigonid circling forces- or at least allow them to react to it proactively
but that seems like the only way to make a competitive game out of it.. even the part where the Spartans got an advantage was turned back by the heroics of Philopoemen. As it was with this Panion scenario-- I probably made it too easy for the Ptolemaic side- by making it balanced for a demo game. JJ |

Thanks for your thoughts, Jeff. Much appreciated. I was intrigued by a well-written article in an issue of Ancient Warfare magazine on Sellasia. Of course, Plutarch also has an inspiring account of the battle. Anyway, I really thought the use of cavalry in the confines of the two hills was unique. I was thinking of isolating the scenario to a portion of the battle (the hill nearest the cavalry charge by Philopoemen). Someday anyway Regards, Dean |

Update: I think the new Aventine Tarentines will make excellent Spartan pikemen for a Sellasia game. JJonas |

Jeff After I read your excellent account I tried to track down the reference in AOA2 for the following: "One thing I did not like was the intrusion of this nutty horse archers get to shoot while charging and then apply the results of the shooting to HTH combat. While this may be a sensible rule for Mongols or Huns, it is one of those across the board changes that cause unknown results-- like suddenly making Getae or Skythians much better in hand to hand combat-- which is kooky." Be grateful if you could point me and my Scythians in the right direction please. Thanks Garry |

Page 5, under the Bow section. After re-reading it
it may also pertain to chariots and elephants as well! So get those Indian heavy chariots READY! |
| Mithridates | 17 Mar 2012 9:18 p.m. PST |
Thanks Jeff I must have read this section several times! Makes the rear rank of Byzantine cavalry well worth the money as well. Cheers Garry |
| Locknar | 18 Mar 2012 5:44 a.m. PST |
I think that rule only works if the charger only has a bow and hand weapon though. So anyone with javlins, thrusting spears, Kontos or throwing spears and a bow can't do it. |
| Mithridates | 18 Mar 2012 3:08 p.m. PST |
Not quite – "Mounted troops also armed with thrusting spear, kontos or lance may not shoot their bows while charging or countercharging". Rear rankers with bow (Combined Formation) may shoot while moving. So Huns with javelins and/or throwing spears get quite a boost, especially as they are BS4. As Jeff noted, gives WS2 Scythian horse archers a chance in melee. |

Jeff, You ahve probably been asked this question a gazillion times
.but
I'm a sucker
.is there any light at the end of the tunnel for the Successor Book has AoA2 quashed it? I would personally put the money on the table right now for a copy ever since your fantastic Alex the Great and the equally great book HatPW (by Mr A Curtis) and another great book BYTGG
..any chance or should we forget it (and never ask the question again)? |
| JJartist | 20 Mar 2012 11:30 p.m. PST |
I doubt there will be anymore WAB supplements. But they have surprised me before. The Successors Ms was submitted. I have no knowledge of any progress. That being said, the AOA2 lists are very close to what I had submitted. But thanks for the compliments. |
| MartinDG | 23 Mar 2012 4:41 a.m. PST |
The AoA2 Successor lists are taken from Jeff's material, though it was provided to me by him, not Forgeworld. They have stated before that they do intend to publish all the manuscripts they have, but given their lack of resources, I don't know whether that is practical, unless they don't bother with lots of photos, for example. The various points about the Successor lists made by Jeff in the report will all be addressed in the Errata to AoA. The shooting in the charge rule is also expanded upon. Now I've broken my own rule about posting on multiple fora. Please ensure any queries about AoA are posted on the WAB forum, as that's the only one I see regularly. |
| Marcus Maximus | 23 Mar 2012 9:16 a.m. PST |
OK Thank you Martin and I will drop you a message over at WAB forum. |
