iabsm for company level actions, although i would like an even faster ruleset for this level play. Not that iabsm is slow, but nowaday i have fewer time |

You need to make a lot of clarifications first. Do you want Land, Sea, or Air battles? Do you want small unit engagements or large battles? Do you want units to represent individual men and equipment, or squads, or platoons, or companies, or divisions? |

I play almost exclusively skirmish battles. We generally use Battalions in Crisis, but I also like Tactical Commander for small, small battles. Just recently acquired Nuts! and I like the system so plan on using that for a while. |
AMDS87 | 14 May 2011 3:34 p.m. PST |
Yeah, I just think FOW has become so popular that if I had of included it I would have just kept reading it over and over again.
Do you want Land, Sea, or Air battles? I was thinking more Skirmish level land battles, but any other types will still be welcomed. |

Depends on the level, I'm more of a company level and down player so I like Nuts!, Disposable Heroes, and Force on Force. Jason Stafford, VA |

I am partial to Guts 'N Glory and I was involved in the making of it. SO therefore, I am not a sock puppet of any kind. |

Blitzgrieg Commander or Crossfire. they portray world war 2 each in a different way but each is very good for what it does. |

Best?, hmmm, best
.. Dressing up as a WW2 soldier, finding a bunch of mates similarly clad and armed, then spend the weekend hunting each other through hills and dales ideally getting freezing cold, soaking wet, exhausted and thirsty and trying to sleep out in a thunderstorm. If that is no good, in the last few years I've had most fun playing large operational games using Megablitz, but that is partly because big multi-player games are always fun, regardless of rules. The progression of events and outcomes did seem vaguely plausible as well. For more tactical games I still think the old WRG 1925-50 rules are one of the best sets out there, if played at an appropriate level (ie no more than a battalion). |

Wouldn't one need to have played them all to give an educated answer??? |

Mein Panzer, each infantry stand is half a section. You can play it simply or add in "drop in rules" for more complication. |

Dexter Ward | 17 May 2011 7:17 a.m. PST |
Best for what purpose? Are you interested in skirmish, tactical, or operational games? Are you mainly interested in infantry? Armour? How long do you want a typical game to take? What sort of complexity do you like? Do you prefer a set which concentrates on weapon stats, or on command and control? Do you enjoy a game with lots of command friction where your troops don't do what you want? It's a bit hard to say which set is 'best' until you know what they are for. It's like asking what is the 'best' car; depends if you want to race it, carry the kids to school, or drive up a muddy track
. |
AMDS87 | 17 May 2011 7:58 a.m. PST |
Best for what purpose? People keep asking questions like this. For the one hundreth time, what are the best rules in YOUR OPINION. I want to know what everyone's personal favourite rules are for gaming WW2. They can be land, air, sea, skirmish, full armies, take half an hour or a whole day, okay? Right rant over. |
Dexter Ward | 17 May 2011 8:04 a.m. PST |
There are no 'best' rules IN MY OPINION. I don't have a single 'best' set. The 'best' set depends on what sort of game I want, who I am playing with, and how long I have to play. Had you asked 'what are the best tactical rules with company sized forces playable in three hours' I could have given you an answer, but your question as stated is meaningless. As I said, it's like asking what the best car is with no clue about how you intend to use it. Dunno why that is so hard to understand. |

For a platoon per side on the table Troops Weapons & Tactics Larger than that up to about a company I Aint Been Shot Mum Company to battalion Battlefront WWII Battalion plus BlitkriegCommander |
Derek H | 17 May 2011 9:18 a.m. PST |
AMDS87: If you wanted to know what people's favourite set of rules for WWII were why didn't you just ask? Best is a completely different question. |
Omemin | 18 May 2011 9:25 a.m. PST |
For each player running a battalion or regiment/brigade: Command Decision For each player running a platoon or company: Tractics (No kidding; been using them since 1973) For each player running a squad or platoon: Beer and Pretzels Skirmish (BAPS) For each player running a squad or less: get back to me; I haven't yet converted Paddy Mud for WWII |

kevanG | 24 May 2011 4:58 a.m. PST |
"As I said, it's like asking what the best car is with no clue about how you intend to use it." you can compare things for different purposes. ie. does general quarters 3 do naval ww2 better than 'bag the hun' does air combat for ww2? It is still a subjective opinion whether their representative purpose is the same or not. And the answer to the above question is they are both the best I have played in that field. Bag the hun shades it because the GQ3 torpedo rules are too fiddlely for no benefit |
