Sumerian Chariots in 6mm

Remember back in 2005, when I promised pictures of those Sumerian chariot stands in 6mm?

We all know about The Successors title – eagerly awaited and in demand. Also the Hundreds Year War one and The Rise of Rome….

But is there still buried treasure out there to be discovered?

clibinarium13 May 2011 4:09 a.m. PST

I was really looking forward to the "Divine Wind" which was going to cover the Samurai, Koreans and Chinese. It even had cover art.

Pijlie13 May 2011 4:45 a.m. PST

Discovering is not so hard. WABForum.co.uk has an Unofficial Lists thread that contains dozens of otherwise unreleased lists, some of whom were (I suspect) originally slated for hardcopy publication.

Divine Wind is unfortunately not among them, but there are Japanese/Korean/Mongol lists that received some favourable coments.

Sorry if I'm being a long way behind the curve – is Warhammer Ancient Battles dead

Which I define as – the are rules no longer being produced.

(Obviously it's not strictly dead as long as someone still plays it, and not having new supplements doesn't mean dead as the book and what exists additionally could be defined as being "complete" as in "we're not doing any more but you can still buy all the stuff we did")

Bowman13 May 2011 6:27 a.m. PST

Rise of Rome
Caesar
The Golden Horde
The Crusades
Action Front! (a ACW rules set)
Divine Wind
World of the Greeks ( don't know the title)
Over the Top (WW1 supplement)
The Thirty Years War (WECW supplement)

Together with, the Successors, the above are all written. Maybe some of the authors will be along to provide corrections. Also, as one can tell, some of these are not strictly WAB, but were all under the aegis of WHH.

Other authors were at different levels of completion. I got as far as a handshake and a verbal OK from Rob Broom. My book would have had the rather pompous title, "Armies of the New World: Meso-America and South America".

Not dead, it's in an induced coma. This is the correct term for anything that is handed over to Forgeworld when they don't really want to do it.

Bowman13 May 2011 6:42 a.m. PST

"Not dead, it's in an induced coma"

Lol.

I'm not so sure. Induced coma is a proper medical technique, where the physicians do eventually plan to revive the patient. The patient's best interest is still at heart.

I think the proper medical term for Forge World's behavior is "supervised neglect".

I'm a WAB player, and I don't buy into the idea that the viability of the game is based on new supplements coming out. (That being said, I'm a huge fan of most of the existing supplements, and would love to see Successors, for example.)

I agree Forge World's distribution model is a bar to entry for new players, and execution of the 2.0 book was disappointing. But I feel a lot of carping about "support" falls into the be-careful-what-you-wish-for category. Imagine if your business depended on coming up with new lists of "historical" armies that people would really, really want to buy.

Sane Max13 May 2011 7:47 a.m. PST

Hmmmmmm another thread implying (though not actually SAYING) that WAB is dead. Who CAN the OP have been? Was it by any chance UK John? Was it? By Crikey it was

What IS your problem UK John? This is what, thread number 6? No one has come to my house and confiscated my set of rules. And as I am one of the contributors to a Supplement-That-Never-Was I can confidently state that if I ever decide we need a 'Hawaian Armies' or 'Siberian Tribe' List for WAB, a halfwitted child could write one in half an hour.

So why are you so keen to read the Eulogy and toss dirt onto WAB's coffin?

"I can confidently state that if I ever decide we need a 'Hawaian Armies' or 'Siberian Tribe' List for WAB, a halfwitted child could write one in half an hour."

We have proof of that, by the way.

Who makes the best Hawaiian elite fire twirlers in 28mm?

Derek H13 May 2011 8:34 a.m. PST

Reports of WAB's death are an exaggeration.

There were towo games being played at the club last night.

1815Guy13 May 2011 8:51 a.m. PST

"if your business depended on coming up with new lists of "historical" armies that people would really, really want to buy"

They call that DBMMMMM (or something like it……)

A Twiningham13 May 2011 12:15 p.m. PST

darthfozzywing – Eureka have some nice Hawaiians, but you would have to convert the twirling fire stick thingies. My inner button counter compells me to point out that those are more Tahitian than Hawaiian though.

Manflesh13 May 2011 12:50 p.m. PST

Some people at our club have just started playing WAB- obviously not quite dead yet.

JJartist13 May 2011 1:15 p.m. PST

Atlatyl's rule (in wargames)….

JJartist13 May 2011 1:18 p.m. PST

"I can confidently state that if I ever decide we need a 'Hawaian Armies' or 'Siberian Tribe' List for WAB, a halfwitted child could write one in half an hour."

------> I agree… if it was rocket science to write balanced lists with historical merit, they would not have tapped me to do it :) (My greatest sadness was that Sane max worked hard on the Pontics, only to have it get yanekd from the unpublished Successors and then placed in the unpublished Caesar volume).

Back to my self induced coma-- it's for my common good.

Atlatyl's rule (in wargames)….

I play tested the ACW supplement, and it was damned good. I can only hope it gets released in some form or another.

aecurtis Fezian13 May 2011 1:25 p.m. PST

Atlatls and maquahuitls explain how the Mesoamericans came to rule the world. (Sharing Europe with the Ligurians and Illyrians, of course.) Oh, wait…

That reminds me (very timely, Jeff): Pat, would you kindly drop me a line by ordinary e-mail at aecurtisATgteDOTnet? I have a request for you, and a small task, if you're willing to take it on.

Atlatyl the Hun?

Intrigued by the reference to the unpublished Pontic list. I suppose we will never never know now?

kallman13 May 2011 8:56 p.m. PST

I have been one of the play testers of the WAB ACW rules Action Front. The author while keeping to the core of WAB has made some neat departures that make the game work well for the period. I would even go so far as to say it is one of the best ACW rule systems I have ever played and the author is still tweaking things.

WAB is alive and well despite Warhammer Historicals.

UK John13 May 2011 11:57 p.m. PST

an interesting point that when are a set of rules finally dead?

20th Maine made the point that they are no longer produced – strictly speaking the Avalon Hill boardgames fell into that category but are still played. Some are even re-purposed by other companies………..

I suppose by force of reason when something stops growing it isn't dead but when it no longer supports itself it can described as in decay.

The thought was not on home made lists (Hawaiians are a lot of fun because they can get pushed off a cliff and you can get miniatures from Eureka for them) but those that were well formed and ready to roll

I did know that Rob had an Armies of Obscurity proposal with lists for Aztecs, Mayans and even the African states. It was just in the hope of doing some tomb raiding before the Yahoo Groups disappear….

UK John14 May 2011 12:05 a.m. PST

@Sane Max

I'll try to resist posting up "WAB – suggest the pallbearers" ;)

Lord Raglan14 May 2011 11:45 a.m. PST

There was planned supplement for WAB Ancient Sea Warfare which was never released.

They approached Grand Manner to make the 28mm ships, Dave made several beautiful models and then the plug was pulled on the project.

WAB isn't dead, it just changed it's name to Clash of Empires

UK John15 May 2011 3:01 p.m. PST

No, Clash of Empires is what WAB 2.0 should have been……

aecurtis Fezian16 May 2011 8:21 a.m. PST

"what, you KILLED my wife and kid?"

No, that wasn't us. As far as we know, that was ordered by The Badger.
