I am working up a project set in 1985 using aircraft assigned to 2 ATAF. The RAF aircraft are relatively easy in grey and green. For the Luftwaffe I have gone for Norm 83 Schema A and B I am a bit stuck on the US stuff at present. I have the US TO 1-1-4 for 1994 (IIRC) which is good for the scheme but doesn't tell me when it came about. Can anyone give me an idea of when the European 1 camouflage was first deployed into USAFE (including the UK Based Squadrons at Woodbridge and Bentwaters)? Regards Si |

Yep, European 1 is fine, although I had to look it up; to be honest I've only ever heard it referred to as Charcoal Lizard on A-10s, so had to check they were the same thing
. Very early A-10s were delivered in the two-tone grey, but charcoal lizard was apparently factory standard from '79, and is all I've ever seen on A-10s here in Blighty; used to love watching them beat the hell out of RAF Donna Nook. I don't know how long it took to spread to Phantoms etc, but I'd have thought by '85 it's probably the right option for air to mud – having just had a quick rummage for Phantom photos, I found a few dated 1983 at Greenham Common, with a mix of SEAC and European 1, and a couple from Mildenhall '86 that are European 1. For other types, looks like two-tone grey on F-16s, and a slightly surprising SEAC pattern on F-111s (must admit I'd have expected that to have been superceded.) Would need to rummage for others. |

The TO 1-1-4 (Change 7) only has the one scheme for the F-111 which is the one I copied for the Vietnam project and does seem to match SEA photos
. TVM for the info I must admit that european aircraft is a new area for me! That said the Luftwaffe Tail Codes for the Tornado are an interesting decal project that I might take forward Si |

It appears the Euro 1 camo started to show up about 1984. The camo was applied to A-7D's, A-10's OV-10's, OA-37's, F-4's, HH-3's,HH-53, and C-130's Another camo you could use is the SEA camo but wrapped around which appeared in about 1983 and continues through the 80's on the same aircraft. F-16's would have the Hill 1 camo which is the three tone grey camo and F-15's had the Ghost grey camo. I have seen some pictures of F-16's in Euro 1 camo, and some F-15D/E's wore the scheme for a brief while. |
