Hi gents,

Following on from my post earlier this week, I have now placed orders with various companies for the 28mm Seleucid army. Subsequently I am now considering part 2 of the Successor project, the Ptolemaic forces. Therefore would you be so kind to cast an eye and make some comments please regarding the army list below before I start planning these purchases:

King Ptolemy II and Army Standard Bearer
8 Agema Companions
10 Neo-Tarentine Light Cavalry
20 Greek Mercenary Hoplites
32 Agema Hypaspist Pike
32 Mercenary Pike
32 Machimoi Pike
16 Thureophoroi
10 Thracian Peltasts
10 skirmishers with javelins
10 skirmishers with bow
1 African Elephant with crew

I have attempted to make this one a little more infantry based than the Seleucids.

I don't think they'll stand a chance against my Prussians!!

The Greek mercenaries at Raphia are Phalangites, but well worth making them like liby Phoenician later hoplites….for your Carthaginians :-)

"The Greek mercenaries at Raphia are Phalangites"

This is debateable. I'd say they are most likely not hoplites (although I still use mine in games for fun). But they could be formed thureophoroi as well as pikemen. Their role on the flank of the phalanx- operating with the Thracians and Eschecrates' 'wing' seems to indicate (to me) they were thureophoroi formed in close order.

There is also a listed unit of Libyan phalanx mercenaries, which possibly is also a unit of lighter armed than pikemen, troops. Or they too could have been armed as phalangites, and trained with the rest. If the Greeks and Libyans were armed as phalangites then looking at the opposition, one can readily see why the enemy line gave way :) (and one would think that Antiochus III's deployment was totally incompetent).
