SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER | 04 May 2011 7:24 p.m. PST |
I had bunches of fantasy stuff, that was placed in various units when I played TSR's Chainmail. |
myxemail | 04 May 2011 7:25 p.m. PST |
Dwarves. A mix of the old Grenadier D&D stuff and Ral Partha from the late '70s and early '80s. I found them in the basement recently and soon to go to ebay. Mike |
The Dozing Dragon | 04 May 2011 7:33 p.m. PST |
First 'army' was A warband of Sprites for the Thane Tostig rules by Barry Minot. Never ended up playing the the game but got all the figures for it – painted them! and built a plasticard 'dungeon'. Happy days. |

I had some kobolds when I dungeoned and dragged. |

Plastic Orcs and Dwarves from the Grenadier Fantasy Warriors boxed game, plastic Empire humans and Chaos/Beastmen/Orcs n'Goblins from the Milton Bradley game Battle Masters. |

Centaurs Put together from Airfix plastics and Minifigs 'S' types. My first large scale conversions too. Haven't survived the glues of that era were not really up to it. x42 |

Uesugi Kenshin | 05 May 2011 2:03 a.m. PST |
Ive never actually done one, but every now and then I still get a henkering to do an undead or Orky army in 15mm. I wouldnt have the slightest idea where to begin with either rules or minis (ducks). |
Martin Rapier | 05 May 2011 3:05 a.m. PST |
I'm not sure I thought in terms of 'armies' when I started, just got a bunch of figures (mainly Minifigs) to use with the old Skytrex 'Middle Earth' rules back in the 70s. Orcs, half orcs, hobbits, dwarves etc tended to go on fairly obvious sides, but the humans were fairly interchangeable. I mixed in figs I used playing D&D as well. I did have a very nice Dragon, but can't for the life of me remember who made it. |

Lord of the rings – Minifigs Elves and Dwarves from their ME range and a mixture of medievals as Gondorians and Rohirrim, fighting against a motley crew of Orcs and trolls from Ral Partha and Asgard (mainly). Had too many leaders and used the heroic battle rules from the Skytrex Middle Earth Battles rules – so it always ended up with Aragorn facing down a Ringwraith, with hordes of dead from both sides all around them. Loved it. Eventually decided the heroic rules should only be allowed for heroes (in big battles) which downgraded the leaders to (mostly) morale effects, which worked a lot better. |

Not bought it. In fact I played Warhammer when it first came out with 15mm ancients as halflings and 25mm knights. It annoyed the at least committed Citadel/GW buyer. |
BugStomper | 05 May 2011 4:03 a.m. PST |
Undead made from both the Citadel and Grenadier ranges. I've still got this army. :) |
Old Bear | 05 May 2011 4:18 a.m. PST |
The Minifigs Hyboria range. The combination of young age and novelty created a magic that for me has never again been fully replicated. There's a lot to be said for being young. |
Karellian Knight | 05 May 2011 4:23 a.m. PST |
I used the Caeser Orcs & Goblins plus a couple of Early Learning Centre dinosaurs to produce a rather large Orc army. |

Skaven. Rats with knives! |
Dunadan | 05 May 2011 6:47 a.m. PST |
I started into the hobby with some pewter knights and Romans from the local art museum's gift shop, and picked up a used copy of "Knights & Magick" from my FLGS. My first really fantastic troops were a box of GW's LotR Wood Elves. |

My first army (as opposed to skirmish and FRPG) – Der Kriegspieler dwarves!Still the core of my 400+ Dwarf Army. Gracias, Glenn
Cool – I'm jealous. Any chance of seeing a piccie ? |
Giles the Zog | 05 May 2011 8:10 a.m. PST |
Hobgoblins. The Citadel ones done by Aly Morrison. Though after about 50 figures, and no new releases I branched out into dark Elves that are my main army to this day. |
Dan 055 | 05 May 2011 8:57 a.m. PST |
My first fantasy army was a historical medieval knights army. - somehow I didn't quite understand the army list bit (and then went and painted them before even trying to find a historical picture). hmmm, yup – fantasy was the result (orange armour). |

Did you have the gyrocopter?
I banned that thing! along with Dwarf bear-riders. Some things I simply could not allow on my table. It was sort of like trying to clamp the lid back on Pandora's Box though

15mm Table Top Games Orcs and Goblins. Now have masses of Orcs, Goblins, Man-Orcs, Warg riders, Wolf riders, Spder riders and much much more all in 15mm. The real scale to get true mass effect. Oh I also have Hades Army(Chaos), Beastmen and Lizards. I use many manufacturers Demonworld, Eureka, Pendraken, Essex, Ral Patha, Grenadier and Bloody Dawn. I WILL use Splintered Light, which I think are great minis once they get a UK seller! As for rules, it used to be DBF or home grown fantasy add-on to Principles of War Ancient(a free set on their Yahoo group) and now will be using Hail Caesar with a fantasy twist, hopefully done by the guy who did the Lord of the Ring varient for Black Powder. Uesugi Kenshin, as you can see there is plenty of choice out there. If you want some recommendations message me. |
The Beast Rampant | 05 May 2011 11:41 a.m. PST |
Skaven. Painstakingly constructed from Warhammer Regiments plastics, and lead from those random two-figure packs, before GW differentiated them from "greater" chaos forces. I also built a chaos army in the process, go figure. I loved the Jes Goodwin ratguys. |

Dwarves to start. Then Elves added in. All Custom Cast at first. |
waaslandwarrior | 05 May 2011 3:17 p.m. PST |
Some human race from the Minifigs AR range. I think it was called the Knights of the Silver Rose, or something similar. I still have them somewere. I also had some older Valley of the Four Winds miniatures, but these were a bit of everything, and you couldn't call that an army. |
53Punisher | 05 May 2011 8:55 p.m. PST |
Dwarves. Mostly GW with a mix of others depending on if the scale matched to GW's. |

Jamesonsafari | 13 May 2011 8:18 a.m. PST |
Burgundian Ordonnance- they fought a lot of Ral partha Orcs and heavy infantry armies built from a friend's masses of D&D fighters! |

I dabbled in 28mm fantasy with great intentions, but never put together what could be considered an army. Then I got my hands on the Baccus 6mm dwarves, and painted them up and based them for HOTT
but never played that game at all. I suppose even Dwarven armies must bide their time in such a peaceful age. |
Lion in the Stars | 13 May 2011 2:41 p.m. PST |
Bretonnians, with a close second of Lizards. Gotta love that WFB boxset with Brets and lizardmen in it. Don't remember what happened to either one, and then bought another Bretonnian army when they were re-released with the Pegasus Knights and the Trebuchet. Traded that for an Empire Army (sold it off), and I'd still like to do an 'Empire' army based on Glenn Cook's The Black Company, but that will be in 15mm, like all the rest of my armies now. |
Estarriol | 13 May 2011 9:49 p.m. PST |
Dwarves, mix of Heartbreaker minis, marauder and GW. Them were the days :) "What's that you say? The price has gone up to £3.00 GBP for a blister pack of only four figures? Outrageous!" |
