I'm looking for a set of generalised rules (or a specific set) of skirmish rules. Thirty Years War would be preferred if a specific era is the rules' focus. I'd like to be able to use 10-30 men per side, reasonably quickly I know there are a lot of 'pirate' sets around; are there any that could be adapted? Rules I have/am aware of already: *Once upon a time in west country (ECW) *Gloire (overly detailed) *I have considered modifying "Song of Blades/Drums and Shakos" Thanks for your help! |

Smooth&Rifled will cover from the 30YW to the Colonial War. It will be released in 2012 but a simplified beta version will be available shortly. Read more here smooth-and-rifled.blogspot.com and in the Impetus forum. |

How about Warhammer ECW? It's written as a big battle ruleset but could be adapted to skirmishes quite easily I think. |

Just a couple days ago I played such a game with Chain Reaction 3.0 Swordplay. Results were outstanding! Poles attacked a Turkish force that had several mercenary elements. The rules don't work well for 'units' but where the skirmish aspects were concerned, you would be hard pressed to find a better set of rules. mjc |

Lord of the Rings/Legends of the Old West/Legends of the High Seas. |

Escalade from AB one games might be good for you. link |

Legends of the High Seas should work; there's nothign specifically pirate about the basic rules. Songs of Blades & Heroes would also work but really towards the smaller scale of battle you mention. |

There is Un pour tous!, a LotOW variant even if it's more 17th century than 16th. link Olivier |

We've been using TFL's Sharp Practice for the Thirty Years War and have been happy. |

There is also the set called "Hot Trod & Red Hand" written by the guys from Vendel. It is written for the Border Reiver Era, but we're using it for 30YW as well. Don't know if SMM got the rights to it along with the minis, but if you do a web search for the name it should come up. It was/is a free PDF download. Used it for a 9-clan campaign a few years back and it worked well. The battles were quick and bloody and a heck of a lot of fun for all. |

Another option would be to adapt Mordheim. |

I'll second TFL/s Sharp practice. We use it for eastern renaissance skirmish(Poles, Turks Cossacks etc) |

What IS TFL/s Sharp practice? |

link I have to admit, we started using Sharp Practice based on Crucible Orc's recomendation. Escalade does have some nice, though brief, information on small unit organization for the TYW though, and while we are not using it I am not sorry for havng picked it up. |

Ganesha (Song of Blades and Heroes) has a specific 30YW/ECW/3 Musketeer and Pirate set coming out soon called Flashing Steel. However it is scaled specifically for individual skirmish: 5 to 6 men a side. The provision for groups is limited. |

Hiya, My Pike and Shotte rules might work, they can be freely downloaded from link if you want to have a look, or, God forbid, actually try them?!! Hope you find what you are looking for somewhere anyway! |

"or, God forbid, actually try them?!!" This made me laugh. Hmmm – one suspects TMP has made you cynical :-) |

evillemonkeigh well I've used the LoTR skirmish rules for the Pike & Shot society's participation game "Wallenstein's Washing" – whether or not they give a good 30YW game I couldn't say – but they give a good skirmish game with the fate & might rules – well in my opinion Herkybird Thanks for that – a spot of light reading on the train this evening methinks |

I recently picked up Ganesha's Flashing Steel for 30 yr war skirmishing, and I was happy to see that it will work rather well for realistic skirmishes in this period. It handles more figures at a time then mentioned above, the rules state 5-15 figures, and that seems about right. I'd be interested in hearing more from anyone using Escalade I can't find any info on how this game works
any reviews out there? I'd also be interested in how people have modified Sharp Practice for the period
I'm a big fan of it, and it would be fun to play so bigger skirmishes at some point. |

Chiming in late here. If you go the Warhammer ECW route, download the Warbands rules for skirmish size restrictions. Very playable. There's also this from the Jackson Wargamers site: link |

I have played Smooth and Rifled, a good set, 20-50 figs a side. Anyone know where to get the Warhammer ECW "Warbands" rules? |
