Actually, I think I know what direction I'm going to go. This should be the perfect setting for the things I want to put into an imagi-nation. I'm going with a location is North Central Africa. Desert in the north, wooded grasslands in the south. Mixed history of colonialism left the country speaking French, Arabic, mixed pockets of broken English, and half a dozen (or more) tribal languages. There is no simple religious majority having instead significant minorities of Islam and Christianity along with traditional religions and "other". The country basically relies on subsistence farming, having a small surplus for trade, some traditional crafts and an oil exploration team surveying the region now that the civil war has calmed down. In the aftermath of the civil war, the people in some regions are relying on humanitarian hand-outs until the situation stabilizes and they can get the internal economic system running again as the new crops ripen for market. Ostensibly a democratic republic, the current political situation hasn't been sorted out to the satisfaction of most interested parties. A UN force is attempting to enforce the uneasy peace, but with so many factions involved, they are finding it difficult to know where to position themselves to be physically between the competing factions. However, at this stage, it seems the warring factions have largely burnt themselves (and each other) out. Perhaps this is the chance for the new government to assert itself and demonstrate mastery of the situation. Like the Phoenix of mythology, can the nation rise from the flames of civil car and return to its former
um
mediocrity? Now all I need is a name
Thanks for your support everyone! Edit: oh, and should probably mention that for added comic enjoyment, my country is located just to the south of that famous state ruled by the Crazy Colonel himself, Wacky K'Daffy. International relations will never be the same again! |

Thanks for the suggestions, but the name suddenly came to me
You see, in colonial times, most of the territory was recognized to be under the authority of a certain sheikh. And the traditional name of the territory under that sheikh was

YERBOUTI!
(OK, most of you are going to recognize where I stole that, but now it's mine and I'm not going to give it up without a fight!) |

Let me guess, bordered on the south by lands of sheikh Yomanimakah, on the north by those of sheikh Rhattlenrholl, on the west by sheikh Watyomoamahgaveya, and on the east by sheikh Enbake. |

Thanks, Murph – I appreciate it. Still working on cities and more detailed geography. Aside from Kawabungaville on the river in the south, haven't planned too much yet. |
