I was just thinking about Foundry's excellent Assyrian range, and it occurred to me that I don't recall having ever seen a thread regarding this army (Tiglath Pileser III and later) during my relatively brief time on TMP. The Assyrian army was at one time the terror of the Ancient Near East and arguably the best organized force in history before the rise of Rome.

Why, if I'm not imagining things, does this army seem to be so unpopular?

Despite this period in history is very interesting, biblical armies in general don't seem that popular. It maybe be down to the fact that we don't really know how warfare was conducted in these times.

There are several companies who are developing their biblical ranges at the moment and once these have become more comprehensive, then the period may have some new "disciples".

Best of luck with the Assyrians.

Check the Yahoo DBMList site. There used to be plenty of DBM players who used Assyrians – they were one of the 'killer armies' IIRC. Even if you do not play DBM, you'll probably find interesting AAR reports from DBM players using Assyrians.

Assyrians are actually one of the more popular biblical armies and have plenty of images and info from a historical note.
You will have probably seen wwwcuttingedgeminiatures.com who will bringing out a full range including enemies and allies. They are more slim line than the Foundry range.
Folks go mad for any amount or sculpting style of Roman and Greeks. Never got a convincing reason for lack of support for biblical period. When it come to Egypt eg plenty of info out there.
Nevertheless great period and does have quite a few enthusiasts.

Possibly its the lack of a popular movie on the Assyrian army that explains it all?

That being said, Assyrians still seem to be the second most popular army of the biblical period (right after Egypt),

I do own an Assyrian army for DBA and I am quite fond of it.

I have an Assyrian Army for DBA. I haven't got anywhere near to painting it yet though as I have too many other things on the go. One day, maybe…

Just because the Assyrians are not mentioned much here on TMP is certainly no indication that it is not a real popular army? It often seems to me that many people forget and/or assume that TMP is composed of a vast majority of the wargamers out there and somehow refects the real market -- It is not and does not in my expierences. Your best bet would to be ask a larger manufacturer of an ancient line of figures ---lets see --hmmm --whetre could we find one --??? I know -- ME!!!
Although the biblical armies do not sell as well as Romans,Gauls, Macadonianns --they certasinly are a constant mover in all of the OG sales in every scale --10mm, 15mm, and 28mm. I have never been sorry that we produced any of the biblicals in any scale. This leads me to assume that they are played with and used.

I've had an Assyrian army for over 30 years – mostly Minifigs, among the last and best of their 25mm ranges. It was the second Ancient army I did after Carthage. Still waiting to finish my Egyptians. It is a very striking looking army!

I would love to collect an Assyrian army, mainly because of all the info we know about them compared to say the 'Sea Peoples'..another few armies i would not mind!

I have a small Assyrian army of Eureka Miniatures figures. Unfortunately it has never reached "critical mass", but I rather hope it will one day, because the tower shields and 4 horse chariots look great!

The Assyrians also did a lot of besieging, and it would br great to reflect this, as well as the field battles.

Cheers, Simon

1/72 plastic covers this army pretty well:

I'm tempted as it looks an interesting army with a range of troop types. Many Biblical armies suffer from sameness, having a bunch of guys with pointy sticks & three chariots.

Used to play them all the time with a group back in Florida that used Tactica. Now with Tactica II coming out, I would paint them up if my group wasn't into Successor and Punic War so much.

I've been playing an Assyrian army in WAB for over 11 years. I've also made movement trays so I can play it in Impetus. I'm quit fond of them…

Ashurman24 Apr 2011 6:31 a.m. PST

Ah…I suppose the name says it all…been gaming them since WRG 5th (1976)…off and on. On my 3rd 25mm Army (1 sold, 1 Minifig 25's, now doing 28's). 2nd 15mm. They go in and out of fashion with the rules sets, as almost every one that changed changed the way they play drastically. They almost always play well enough, but often require quite a bit of finesse to win in tournament play. Knights and Pikes are NOT your friends <grin>! That said, I love them, and hope to finish the 28's in a few years and put them on the table with the rules flavor of the day!

I'll be doing 10mm Assyrians right after I've finished the Kushite Egyptians. I used to have both in 6mm, and Assyrians are certainly imposing in appearance, and dangerous withal, despite a desperate lack of punch in melee (which is a problem their opponents have too, so not that much of a headache).

Sobieski30 Jul 2014 8:51 p.m. PST

P.S. Russ, how about a few pictures of the 10mm range you have?
