I was thumbing through a recent issue of First Empire magazine, where the publisher has featured an illustrated article showing Napoleonic wargaming. Everyone looked to be having a great time. So
why aren't you a Napoleonic wargamer? |

I can tell you why I stopped being a Napoleonic's gamer for many years. My free time didn't allow for multi-day scenarios that seemed to be the norm with big battles with rules such as Empire. Lasalle has brought me back to Napoleonics. But I am still looking for a game that is battalion based, allows for unit formations/changes and scales up to larger battles. Lasalle, I think might scale up fine. Have heard good things about Old Trousers too. I do not care for the Napoleons Battles/Shako level of abstration as I still want to see battalions and their formations. I may compromise with the release of Blucher somewhat. But I will still be drawn to the battalion unit formations. I also prefer more figures than the Empire scale per battalion. And just to clarify, I started with Empire II and bought Empire III when it came out as well. I also bought Napoleon's Battles, Shako, Legacy of Glory and a bunch of other rules too. Even have Battles for Empire by Buck Surdu (which I actually happen to like) I have not tried Age of Eagles but the Shako/Nap. Battles basing turns me off. |

Would like to be a Napoleonic wargamer as this is what I started with but I have too many ongoing projects to finish first ML |

Funny looking uniforms and funky hats. And I never did like the French anyway. Something about lining up to be shot just doesn't appeal to me I'll take a bug hunt any day. Give me squad or two of Marines in an infested complex or hulking spaceship and I'll show a Rock'n Good Time! 8) |

I play Napoleonics with a set of rules from the 70's that are simple, use minimal dice rolling and are enjoyable. However, there's no way I'm going onto THOSE boards here. I like to keep my gaming fun. |
AndrewGPaul | 06 Apr 2011 10:15 a.m. PST |
The same reason I don't do VSF, pulp or any other historical period from 100 to 1939; I've no interest in the background to the setting. I agree with PapaSync about the silly uniforms. |

I have collected the minis for years but have yet to game with any of them. |

I was. Twice. I had British 15mm "armies" and sold them off. Twice. I forget why, but I don't regret it. I'll play gladly with other people's armies, and they can play with the ones I have that I actually care about. |

The Harvey Keitels and Keith Carradines of the Napoleonic boards scared me away. |

1) I got so bored painting the same uniform on the same poses over & over. I could never paint enough figures to play a game. 2) I found the history of my local area (the Southern plains) more interesting. 3) Lack of female characters. |

Tried it once in 6mil scale with a friends figures, couldn't get into it. Even with all the new figures out their it still does not appeal, much prefer the Marlburian period |

Too vested in the SYW. Luckily, a good choice – much more helpful and gentlemanly discussions and advice – having Mr. Duffy take an active part in discussing the period at Conventions doesn't hurt either. Just as nice uniforms – slightly easier to paint without the vitriol, and no (visible) bricoles to worry about on my limbers. |

I refused for many years. Too many restrictions on what your troops could and couldn't. I had trouble remembering the rule details. Now, however, I dabble with Volley and Bayonet. Much cleaner and I don't have a headache after the game is over. |

The thought of having a huge man exploding with pent up rage and severe halitosis screaming at the top of his lungs an inch away from my face because my Ptomanian heavy mounted grenadiers have a light saffron sash instead of a medium light saffron sash is enough to keep me from joining the bricole gang. Besides, the best battles have tricornes. |
Sundance | 06 Apr 2011 10:50 a.m. PST |
I like the period and have some figs, but I don't want to deal with some of the people on the Nappy boards. Most of them are decent enough folks – just a few nutjobs. |
nazrat | 06 Apr 2011 10:55 a.m. PST |
Too much to paint already to do the millions (I told you a MILLION times not to exaggerate!) of models I would have to have, too much research would need to be done, and too many prats who make all the good guys who play the genre look bad. |
Angel Barracks | 06 Apr 2011 11:01 a.m. PST |
I play with Napoleonic figures in a psuedo-realistic way. fictitious forces fighting fictitious battles in fictitious places. But all dressed up proper and marching like what a good solider does. |
thosmoss | 06 Apr 2011 11:01 a.m. PST |

I think you have to virtually refight the war of the 9th coalition just to get a rules concensus before you can start the arguments on scale, frontage, depth, table size or allowable dice colors

Not in particular order 1)Uniforms are too complex 2)No artistic freedom when painting uniforms 3)Too much confusion about exact colors of uniforms (Napoleon NEVER wore blue!) 4)Too boring to paint the same uniform over and over again 5)Confusion about napoleonic tactics and their representation in rules |

I used to be a Napoleonic wargamer, and after a some bad experiences sold off my sizable 15mm collection some twenty-five years ago. I don't have any problem with Napoleonics in general or Napoleonic gamers, its just a road I'm not willing to go down again. |

I am and always will be one. No other period in history can POSSIBLY compete. Land and sea BTW. Repetious uniforms? Bah, humbug. The only reason WWII *might* not be worse is because you don't need as many for a "big" game. |
SBminisguy | 06 Apr 2011 1:18 p.m. PST |
Napoleonics can be fun, I play when someone else runs a game -- just too many figures to buy and paint to field an army. I spent a lot of time/money doing Ottomans & Russians, and still didn't have enough figures! If you have any collection obsession issues, Nappy gaming will bring it out in spades! |
Space Monkey | 06 Apr 2011 1:35 p.m. PST |
Too many figures required, little room for creative exploration, when I've watched Napoleonic games I was either bored or horrified by the participants. |

and above all no Early Imperial Romans! :) |
