Does anyone on here do Dystopian Wars from Spartan Games? I saw it at my local FLGS and purchased the rules and a Prussian naval battle group. I was just wondering if anyone else saw these figures and rules. They are pretty nice from what I've read and the figures are very nice from what I've assembled/primed!

Hi J,

I play it at Ilford Wargames Group in the UK. We have 7 players and we are enjoying it though the rules are bit 'odd' in places so we have started to add in IWG House Rules.

I have also dumped the Kindom Of Britania as they are just plain 'broken' and quirks of the system make them rubbish. In place of them I have created The Great British Hegemoney instead with 'fixed' rules to make them playable.

The rules are fun and not meant for 'serious' play and we are definatly having fun with them, in fact, they will be IWG's game that we take to shows this year starting with Salute.

If your group like a fun set of rules then this one is for you. If you are creating a tight set of 1870 rules…move along, nothing to see here.

I've played it and it gets fairly regular run outs at our wargames club in Eastbourne. It's certainly fun, although it's not really a *serious* game, as mentioned above. If you can roll 6's, then you're going to be fine!

We haven't noticed anything particularly broken one way or the other so far, but I expect we haven't really played it enough just yet.

Naval rules are fun. THe models are very nice, if odd. The FLGS had problems keeping them in stock as the models nearly flew off the shelves. Friends and I have run demo games and the players seem to have fun. I would be interested in the fixes you made as Britannia does seem to be the weak sister

Dead as a post locally – the guys who might have played were warned off by people disgruntled by Uncharted Seas and Firestorm, both of which saw brief initial interest and then flopped. I'm looking forward to the Firestorm Armada and Dystopian Wars blowout sales I see coming soon – will pick up some minis on the cheap for conversion parts. Uncharted Seas has long since been liquidated via the same process.

YMMV of course – game sales on small company stuff are always very regional.

Have Spartan figured this out yet?

Doing well in Atlanta. Fun game. While some folks find the minis – odd, I for one really like them. They are very nicely done and paint up very well. I think they have really improved their overall product since the very first release of Uncharted Seas. The reason some stores are having problems getting the product is that Dystopian Wars has been very successful. In fact, the local store is now carrying Uncharted Seas. I actually DW will finial but Spartan Games on the map.

I'm waiting for the French fleet to show up, but there doesn't seem to be a huge interest in the game locally. The LGS has a lot of Spartan Games stuff, but it's still building steam, I think.

It was not a good day, shock waves were rippling through Parliament and on to the Palace. The Great British Hegemony was shaken to its roots by the events unfolding in the North Atlantic Sea and the Far Eastern oceans. The GBH fleets where in full retreat and reduced to holding actions and a defensive stance not at all in character with the aggressive nature of the Hegemony.

The First Sea Lord walks boldly into a quiet and pensive room, all around the great leaders of the Hegemony's war machine stand solemn and angry. The First Sea Lord stops and bows to her Majesty and nods to the Prime Minister.

Queen Victoria puts down the report on the terrible news and utters words that will become legendary "There Is Something Wrong, With My Battleships"

The Prime Minister replies "Yes First Sea Lord, care to explain?". The First Sea Lords at first explodes "I'll tell you What" but then remembers where is standing, composes himself and states "Your Majesty, we appear to be suffering more at the hands of the Bean Counters then any defeat the enemy inflicts on us, at this rate we'll be back to the Dark Ages worrying about the French!"

This comment brings a small ripple of laughter around the room but a small sound from the Throne soon quietens the room then the now immortal words are uttered by the Queen of the Great British Hegemony "We Are Not Amused!…"

The Prime Minister opens his mouth to reply when the First Sea Lord injects "Your Majesty, it is in response to our severe weaknesses being exploited that I have been personally overseeing the refit of our latest Battleship, it will be the new power on the water and with it Britannia will rule the waves as never before. Final construction is complete and only the paint need be applied, if Your Majesty wishes to view the ship…"

"What have you called this saviour of our Hegemony?" Queen Victoria coolly asks.

"With your permission I'd like to christen her HMS.WARRIOR"

The photo of what I did is on their forum under Paint & Model, Work In progress, sorry no link as work is bit picky about what I can access during the day.

I will 'fix' the KoB Cruiser next though it needs less work than the BB. I also created The Great British hegemony as my own faction (so no one can complain about me medling with the Kob…there have been some quite heated debates regarding Kob which I really can't be asked to join in with.

As to whether SG know about the KoB being broken…they must do as the amount of discussion on them is proably the biggest on their forum and they have yet to utter one single word to justify their stats for the Kob. Simpler to create my own.

Doing well in Atlanta in a couple of FLGS. Nice if somewhat unusual models (half VSF/half Steampunk – all baroque) that paint up very nicely with a bit of effort. We haven't noticed any real broken aspects for any one side and are looking forward to added models.

Uncharted Seas and Firestorm Armada didn't get the same play. Dystopian seems to have a bit more (maybe the VSF bit) going for it.

I only just discovered these at the local shop, and after gasping at the prices, I found an online supplier that fit better into my budget.

I'm NOT a fantasy/sci-fi gamer normally (with the exception of LOTR), but I've "taken the plunge" and sent for the rules and 2 starter sets with carriers (KOB and Prussian).

Some of the painted examples are simply stunning, and I can't really agree with those who say the ships look "silly". It's not REAL, after all…

Can't wait to start painting!

Yep, you're used to historicals, alright. As resin goes, Spartan isn't terribly expensive.

Bunny – nice looking stuff.

If any of you are still playing or interested, this is the latest and clearest description form the new owners on how the design of the miniatures is going –

"I think it's important to acknowledge that visually the game is going to embrace and evolve the more outlandish concepts from second edition Dystopian Wars rather than keeping it in the ‘could happen' vibe of the first edition. So more iceberg ships and robot dragons and less WWI German battleships. Our design team, while respectful of influences and inspiration found in the real world, are much more stylistically led rather than continuing the pseudo-historical feel of what went on before. For some that means the designs are going to be going in a direction that is not for them. The ships of the Dystopian Age are not ships you would honestly expect to find in real life (with or without Stirginium), but as playing pieces in a war game we want to make sure they are visually distinctive and exciting. In that regard Dystopian Wars will have much more in common with the design philosophies behind sci-fi and fantasy games like Warmachine than historical games like Flames of War."
