Talking to Rob from Eureka at Cold Wars he mentioned that he thought there was no Russian cavalry except Cossacks in Suvarovs army. I went back to check my 1799 scenarios and I found the Lykoshin Hussars and the Schlepev Dragoons at Zurich which I think are Russian. Did I get that right? Rob are you talking about battles with Suvarov involved like Novi (in which case I think this is the case)? |

Tod: I think they were part of the Russian contingent that fought in Southern Germany and not part of his force that fought in Italy and the Alps. Obviously, they were around for the late fighting in Switzerland. |

Nafziger's O.B. #799IAA – Russian Army under Suvarov, 16 September 1799 lists 2 Cuirassier, 5 Dragoon, 2 Hussar, 1 Tartar and 12 Cossack Regts. ?? PDF link |

Tod, I was talking about Suvarov's army in Italy and not Korsakov's army in Southern Germany. It is my understanding that Suvarov had one small Austrian cavalry contingent (not sure where I got this) with him but the rest of his cavalry was Cossack. I had the same information that BTC mentioned about the Russian cavalry in Southern Germany. cheers, rob eureka miniatures usa |

Ok so by Germany so you mean Switzerland and Germany? If so then that is consistent with what I have found too. |

In the opening of the Italian campaigns Suvarov had only Cossack regiments, the Austrian Dragoon regiment Karaiczay was attached with the Russians Duffy, Eagles over the Alps, page 50 On his ecpic crossing over the Alps I could find only cossack regiments. One can follow his tracks still today – I did in 1999 – very impressive landscape. |

von Winterfeldt: I hope to follow his passage through the Alps in the future. This is becoming more of a reality with a good friend moving to Zurich. |

BTC Terrainman – you will love it – I started in Bellinzona – I was lucky because due to the then bicentenial there were some special exhibitons at Bellinzona and directly at the Gotthardt pass. Another impressive trip are the Ligurian Alps where the battle of Loano was fought, it is simply incredibly in what harsh terrain and weather conditions those armies fought. |
