I just ordered the rules and Im familiar with the generic setting they were designed for but Im wondering what historical conflicts players have tackled so far with them?

Generalstoner4910 Mar 2011 7:16 p.m. PST

Could do the Somali/Ethopian war. Another big one would be the South African/Communist insurgency.

Could even get away with some of the Rhodesia and Congo stuff.

Pictors Studio10 Mar 2011 7:49 p.m. PST

Yeah, the Ogaden War would work well for this. I think it would work well for Rhodesia as well.

Also the fighting between the AMC and IFP in South Africa post apartheid would be possible as well.

The various groups that were set up by the Apartheid South African government to smuggle guns and bring funds into the country would be an interesting scenario to do. Especially after the government fell. These guys had basically no oversite after that and had huge smuggling businesses set up by the government that they now had control over. Some of them ended up with large criminal empires.

The rules dont arrive at mi casa till tomorrow so I havent browsed them yet but would urban conflicts like Chechnya 1995 (Grozny) and Georia 2008 be possible or is that reaching a bit for the scope the authors intended?

Prince Alberts Revenge10 Mar 2011 8:51 p.m. PST

I have 15mm PLO, IDF, Palestinian militia and Syrians for '82 Lebanon. I started collecting for Nicaragua '79-Somocistas (in US and Israeli kit with staghounds and Shermans) and Sandinistas (homemade armored trucks, mortars, etc.). I always wanted to do Tanzania and Uganda, see if I can keep ol' Idi Amin in power…

Prince Alberts Revenge10 Mar 2011 8:54 p.m. PST

As for Chechnya and Georgia, you could probably pull it off. The rules are very adaptable. When it gets into high-tech equipment (TOWs, ATGM, etc.), it may go beyond the scope of the game.

Grand Duke Natokina10 Mar 2011 8:57 p.m. PST

You could probably also adapt them for Angola.

Wolverines and Cuban invaders?

Chuck Norris (an economical Army of One) and Cuban invaders?

Ex-cons invading Cuba? (This is from "Red Zone Cuba", aka "Night Train to Mundo Fine") Only saved from well-deserved obscurity by MST3K:

Any conflict generated in the course of a game of "Junta"?

Sharks versus Jets?

Benny and the Jets?

Any episode of Benny Hill?

You are only limited by your imagination. History presents generous fodder. Or grist. Or something.

So the question is, how much of your carrier allowance does Coleman Francis take?

"what historical conflicts players have tackled so far with them"

WW1, RCW, SCW, WW2.

I have also seen them used for Biblical Chariot Warfare.

I have also used them for Paddy Ashdowns time as a 2nd Lt in Kenya with the Paras, I've even got a Wessex helicopter…

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP11 Mar 2011 4:59 a.m. PST

Martin, which area of WWI?

Altius11 Mar 2011 7:33 a.m. PST

Portuguese Colonial Wars. I was also thinking of using these rules to do Nicaraguan Contras vs Sandinistas, but i haven't begun that one yet.

advocate11 Mar 2011 9:00 a.m. PST

Martin

Do you know where the Chariot Warfare mod can be found? I am seriously intrigued by it.

Paint it Pink11 Mar 2011 12:42 p.m. PST

Mogadishu 1990s style, or even Iraq.

Martin Rapier11 Mar 2011 1:43 p.m. PST

"Martin, which area of WWI?"

Western Front, although mainly 1917-18. Deployed up to a division on the table. Tanks, wire, trenches, heavy arty, great stuff.

For the chariot warfare variant you'd need to track down Phil Steele from the Society of Ancients, he ran it at the Wargames Developments conference a few years ago. I don;t think he hangs out on TMP though.

The basic move/comabt/morale systems are very simple and work or prety well anything with ranged weapons fire. I poarticularly like them because if people bunch up, they die in droves. For some reason, people seem to find it very hard not to bunch up, even if they don't have to (anythign which isn't militia).

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP12 Mar 2011 6:10 a.m. PST

No shortage of conflicts to attempt. I'm thinking over the first Chechen War, maybe Lebanon 2006, and the current insurgency in Kyrgyzstan.

Martin From Canada14 Mar 2011 6:42 a.m. PST

Can it be used for the current ugliness in Lybia?

Lion in the Stars14 Mar 2011 2:07 p.m. PST

maybe. you'd have to approximate the stats of the rebels to one of the army lists in the book, though.

Uesugi-san, you could probably get a close approximation of the Georgian war, but some of the *really* lopsided engagements (Chechnya) are probably outside the scope of the game.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP14 Mar 2011 4:54 p.m. PST

Lion, only skimmed the rules, and in particular the Arm Lists so far, but I agree, definitely outside the scope.

That being said, a few minor tweaks and home mods and I could certainly pull it off with out major adjustments.

My main question now is when my Ultra-Modern Russians and Chechens come out do I base them 3 to a base for AK-47 or singles for Force on Force…decisions, decisions…(or just buy enough of both armys to base up both armies for boths sets of rules, the logical compulsive wargamers solution!).

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP17 Mar 2011 4:06 a.m. PST

Decided to leave Chechnya for Force on Force. Will be using Ak-47 for Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan vrs. Govt Forces of Kyrgyzstan…a decidedly backwards modern conflict if ever their was one! Truly appropriate for the rules I believe.

I'm thinking of getting B'Maso from two fat ladies, I was wondering can it be easily modded for use with AK-47/Modern Africa? As it looks like it has alot of the conflicts from the 60's up to the 80's.

Cheers

Jeff

The Angolan Civil War is an ideal one – more factions than any other war I can think of short of the World Wars:

MPLA/FAPLA
UNITA
FNLA
SWAPO-PLAN
SADF
SWATF
SADF 32 Battalion
Cubans
Soviet and other assorted Communist advisors

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP18 Mar 2011 1:34 p.m. PST

RMD, I have always been interested in that conflict, mostly due to the Cuban involvement, but I confess, I know absolutely nothing about it!

Jemima Fawr18 Mar 2011 2:14 p.m. PST

The best place to start is Johan Schoeman's 'War in Angola in Miniature' site here:

warinangola.com

This started as a wargames site about 3 years ago, but has snowballed into so much more since then – he's even now organising reunions between former Soviet and SADF Angola veterans who found the site and now discuss their sides of the war with each other in friendship. It's amazing when something as simple as wargames can achieve something like that!

I've got a couple of scenarios and a campaign/scenario generator at the bottom of this page:

fireandfury.com/scenarios.shtml

One of the scenarios is played out here (using BF:WWII rather than AK47 though):

FAPLA & SWAPO-PLAN army lists (for BF:WWII) are here:

SADF & SWATF army lists are here:

And UNITA army lists are here:
