Anyone tried out this ruleset?

I found them loads of fun. I wrote up a game I played using MAA to refight the Battle of Callincum on my blog, see here:

At the end I discuss what I thought of them in a bit more detail.

The post has links to some reviews and links to the forum which, although does not see much action these days, has a few battle reports and discussion on some rule changes to improve the game. Forum is here:

The game plays very fast as something dies in every combat. To me, it is an underrated ruleset for fast and furious fun.

I am in the process of writing up a battle report of a refight with Zama using MAA that should be posted in about a week (no promises).

Like it fine. It is a beer and pretzels game. the combat system can be broken but for the most part, playing with like minded friends, it is a great little game.

Thanks for the info and review – inspired me to pick up the PDF versions of MA and MAA and give them a whirl.

I really liked the rules. Thought they had much more potential than HOTT. If a DIY system is added they could rock!

Thanks,

John

MA:Ancients includes a DIY system. There was some work on a DIY Army Builder for Fantasy but it was never finished. IIRC magic and spells were the biggest stumbling block.

I think the game is great fun though.

Although the recomended basing is 2 inch frantages it works just fine with DBx elements.

Yeah, according to the forum the DIY system for fantasy is being playtested as of last December.

But they claim to be working on the fantasy custom rules since two years or so…

Yes I have the Mighty Armies rules set. Mike is starting to run tournaments at shows which he attends.

There will be some supplemental material becoming available in the near future.

As mentioned earlier, here is the Zama battle report on my blog:
