Ok, in the same care package as the nuts, my mom sent me a Lindt Chili Dark Chocolate bar. The chili is ok as is the Sea Salt, but neither is my fave. I almost always prefer mint flavors or fruit filling/flavoring a close second. So what's your favorite decadent (defined as Lindt, Tobler, Ghirardelli, Hershey's special bars, etc.) chocolate bar?

Pictors Studio28 Feb 2011 6:57 p.m. PST

I have always liked 99 Flake bars, Caramello Bars and Skor. Tobler are pretty good as well. American chocolate really isn't as good as its European counter part and it needs something else to go with it to make it stand out.

Battle Phlox28 Feb 2011 7:00 p.m. PST

I have a weakness for Lindt white chocolate.

Schogun28 Feb 2011 7:44 p.m. PST

Lindt truffles aka Lindor truffles. I buy them as stocking stuffers at Christmas, but end up eating them all because my family doesn't want them.

Florida Tory28 Feb 2011 8:16 p.m. PST

Anything by Whittakers. The kiwifruit is the family favorite.

Lindt truffles or chocolate bars, luscious!

Dark Hershey is fine.

David Manley28 Feb 2011 9:38 p.m. PST

"Dark Hershey is fine"

No, he said chocolate bars. Heaven knows what they put in Hershey bars but it surely can't be chocolate. Quote from a recent UK/US military trials event:

US trials officer "Whats a Mars Bar"
UK trials officer "Its like a Hershey Bar, except it tastes nice"

:)

Sundance, where are you that your Momis sending you care packages?

Pretty much anything by Godiva. However, I also like Cadbury's Dairy Milk: You've got to appreciate the commonplace to savour the divine.

Ferrero Roche (ok not a bar). Galaxy with hazelnuts. Milka (purple packets) with hazelnuts, or normal milka. No plain chocolate, white chocolate, fruit or other such carp.

The missus and my dad love the Green and Blacks plain chocolate with cherry.

Andrew May101 Mar 2011 3:53 a.m. PST

Monsieur, with these Rocher you are spoiling us!

skippy000101 Mar 2011 5:02 a.m. PST

All things chocolate!…no, not bugs…

raducci01 Mar 2011 5:08 a.m. PST

If it is decadent, you should have checked the 'use by' date before you bought it.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER01 Mar 2011 5:31 a.m. PST

Raducci, I think you mistook decadent for decedent. grin
I've always loved Tobler, and Heath Bars.

American chocolate really isn't as good as its European counter part and it needs something else to go with it to make it stand out.

While I would generally agree with you, the 62% Cacao Semisweet chocolate bar by Scharffen Berger is very good, and IMHO stands up with the best of the European bars.

By far my favorite chocolate is from Norman Love Confections. My wife and I are lucky enough to live nearby, so we always pick up a box of his wonderful chocolates for our birthdays, our wedding anniversary, and Valentine's Day.

klepley01 Mar 2011 6:35 a.m. PST

The different tastes people prefer is chocolates is pretty interesting. My son and wife are from the Ukraine, and their chocolate is very dark, and has very little sugar. I think is it is some of the worst I have ever tasted. I like Hershey's. I think being in the US, that is what I grew up on, and so I'm used to the Hershey's taste (very sweet). Anyone else have a different specific taste they have noticed in their country?

Belgian supermarkets do an orange chocolate bar that is superb. My Belgian friend moved to Sweden so I think I am out of luck for them…

bridget midget the return01 Mar 2011 7:18 a.m. PST

Terry's Chocolate Orange, the traditional milk chocolate one, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Christmas isn't Christmas unless I've eaten a whole one before noon on Christmas Day. I normally get bought at least 3 for presents.

Another favourite is Thornton's Viennese Truffles.

I'm very fond of the Godiva (or Ghirardelli) dark chocolate, particularly with the raspberry filling. That, to me, is a superb flavor combination. I also like both Skor and Heath toffee bars, probably with a slight edge to Skor.

For chocolate *bars* I like a 60-70% dark chocolate and there are several good brands. It's just chocolate, unadulterated except for a little sugar.

When it comes to confections, things with fruit filling etc, there are a lot of things I like. Godiva makes a nut cream filling that is pretty good, but I don't care much for their chocolate. Russel Stover, our local brand makes caramels and chews that I like, and I just discovered they do a very good peppermint bark with dark chocolate at Christmas. I think Trader Joes has a really good peppermint bark, too. Both are made with real cocoa butter in their white chocolate.

slugbalancer01 Mar 2011 8:08 a.m. PST

Bendicks Bitter Mints. Bitter chocolate (95%) and a lovely mint filling. Superb!

Flat Beer and Cold Pizza01 Mar 2011 8:12 a.m. PST

Scharffen Berger, Godiva, or Ghiradelli for me, too. However, I loves me some Cadbury Fruit and Nut!

cfuzwuz01 Mar 2011 8:19 a.m. PST

I have tried them all and Hershey's with almonds is the best. Dark chocolate is a waste of chocolate im my opinion. I hear people talking about all these great European chocolates and I try them and am not impressed. I still like most of them (it is chocolate!)but the Hersheys hate is pure BS!!!
We have Mars bars in the US (may not be the same as England) and they probably don't sell 1/20th of what Hersheys does.

Never been a big fan of chocolate…

I make my own, Ghiradelli 60% baking chips with dried papaya and mango. Learning to temper the chocolate has been a bit of a chore, but I know have dark chocolate bars at about 1/3 the cost.

Princeps01 Mar 2011 9:45 a.m. PST

We get our chocolate from Pierre Marcolini here in Brussels.

Turkish Delight for me.

When I was a lad it was Frye's* Turkish Delight, now it's Sultan's Turkish Delight.

(* Or was it Fry's? Can't even remember now. Sigh.)

Sundance01 Mar 2011 9:54 a.m. PST

My Canadian wife notices a difference between American chocolate (Hershey's, et al) and European and Canadian chocolates – she says American chocos taste "chemically". If you compare the list of ingredients, there is indeed a lot of crap in the cheaper American produced chocos that aren't in the better chocos.

tigrifsgt01 Mar 2011 10:46 a.m. PST

Nestle milk chocolate bar. Much better than Hershey. I also used to like the Cadbury chocolate, but that is made by Hershey in the U.S. now.

John D Salt01 Mar 2011 11:05 a.m. PST

Niederegger or Ritter dark-chocolate-covered marzipan.

Lindt Excellence or Green & Black's 85%.

Bendick's "Sporting & Military", now sadly discontinued.

All the best,

John.

Timbo W01 Mar 2011 1:05 p.m. PST

Princeps has it for me! You can't beat a good Belgian chocolatier (though I suppose the Swiss might argue).

Bendicks, Lindt and Cadbury's Bournville for less exalted chocs.

Hersheys – YUK!!!

What's the deal with Godiva? I see it at airports worldwide, but never in Cov!

Contrary to what you might think I rarely buy chocolate, but it has a habit of magically disappearing very quickly in my vicinity…..

Green & Blacks Organic Dark Chocolate.

Thortons Dark Chocolate Caramels.

But really, my favourite is a big block of Cadburys Dairy Milk, just what you need when charging about on the hills all day, along with a tray of flapjack.

Major Mike02 Mar 2011 9:46 a.m. PST

Thought Cadbury's was made in China now. I also thought I learned that last Easter when there was a recall of some Chinese produced chocolate which included Cadbury's.
