I miss Dragon Magazine… I used to get it a year after publication from a friend who subscribed. Now it's been etherealized and I'm reduced to reading back issues in rotation.

I too miss Dragon from the days when it was The Dragon, when it too had content about all sorts of games, books and whatnot, including non-gaming fiction, and wasn't just a house organ for the company. They had a good run through the '80s (I still have a lot of those issues), but I haven't seen anything in the last two decades that I cared to read at all.

I still have all my old MWAN's and pull 'em out for a look through from time to time. A great mag that is sorely missed!

I loved the Courier but I think MWAN is the most missed, especially Hal's 'I never met a wargaming product I didn't like reviews'. His enthusiasum was inspiring.

Fantasy Modelling back in the early 80s. Only 6 issues but it was a great insight into the US fantasy miniature market. Still chasing some of those pieces today.

Am I the only one who hated the early White Dwarf issues?
Only one I've ever heard of…

vtsaogames21 Feb 2011 2:38 p.m. PST

Courier, followed by MWAN.

I liked MWAN, but even though it is a distant memory, I do miss Battle.

Practical Wargamer, although that itch is now scratched by Battlegames.MWAN never seemed to make it this side of the Atlantic.

Al Bundy misses "Big 'Uns":

Strategy & Tactics when it was published by SPI. Incidentally, Decision Games still publishes it every two months, still with a game in the issue, but those SPI issues are sentimental favorites.

DalyDR21 Feb 2011 3:58 p.m. PST

The Courier.

MWAN. It was stuffed to overflowing with wargaming goodness every issue.

Hal's MWAN

wehrmacht21 Feb 2011 5:28 p.m. PST

White Dwarf and The Dragon. They were well laid out and attractive to look at generally too, unlike some of the hoary old mags cranked out on somebody's mimeograph machine.

Yet another vote for MWAN. I consider it an honor that I was able to meet and game with Hal at Bayou Wars.

Another vote for Hal's MWAN.

MWAN and The Courier. Crime that no one produces a hard copy historical gaming magazine in the US any longer.

Battle/Practical Wargamer as they were to all intents & purposes the same thing. Airfix Magazine for those old enough!

MWAN, by Hal Thinglum for sure is number one, followed by The Courier. I used to do some artwork and cartoons for Hals magazine. It was a lot of fun.

Call out the flying squad, then, and go bust the mob what broke the last one.

Yes, never quite found out what happened to my subscription when the "new" MWAN/Courier died without a sound.

Realize that it is expensive and labor intensive, so a new magazine could not be started by fans as both MWAN and The Courier were in pre-internet days, but would think that there must be a living out there for someone who had the skills. After all, is that not how Bill makes a living here at TMP? What would it take to be a success, a couple of thousand copies sold per month, or bi-monthly?

I'd suggest that the lack of such a product is and will damage the hobby as time goes on.

Black Gobbo. Yes, it was only a web-based e-zine, but it had some excellent modelling articles.

I'll join in the chorus of MWAN and to a lesser extent the Courier.

MWAN. Hal was a real gentleman!

IronMike07 Mar 2011 3:42 p.m. PST

Has to be MWAN. It felt less like a magazine and more a chat amongst the lads at the local game club. For us yanks wo don't have game clubs, it was a godsend.
