Is anyone interested in Modern Era gaming (post WWII to today)and if so what scale, period and rules?

1) Korea
2) Nato vs Warsaw Mid 80's
3) Russia vs ex-Soviet States
4) various Arab-Israeli Wars
5) India-Pakistan
6) Vietnam
7) Falklands
8) anything in Afrika
9) other Asian conflicts
10) Nato vs Russia today
11) Iraq vs Iran
12) US vs Iraq or Afganistan
13) US vs Iran
14) Balkans

1) 1/285
2) 15mm
3) 25/28mm

I dont know of any good rules set for moderns. I have fooled around with several and dont really like any of them. I like the rules they use at Historicon for the big game they put on with Miniature Building Authority's stuff but they arent published. Anyone have suggestions?

Balkans, 1990s in 15mm, as an imagination called Kajgaslavia.

NATO vs. WARPAC, early 1960s in 6mm.

I'll be looking at the new Force on Force when it comes out.

All of the above periods are well handled by Ambush Alley and Force on Force games, if you are interested in squad to platoon scale actions. The rules handle 15mm-20mm-28mm and with minimal work 1/285. Basing is individual figures.

I think I've doen pretty much all of these, and in scales 1 + 2.

Appropriate rules depend on what level of game you want to do. Scrabbling in the green zone in Helmand needs something tactical, whereas Chinese Farm needs something grand tactical or even operational.

Modern Spearhead and Fistful of TOWs are both pretty good 1 base = 1 platoon games. We did the entire 1967 AiW using Megablitz (1 base = 1 battalion). I modified some of my favourite WW2 tactical rules for modern and ultra modern COIN stuff. AK47 is fun for postwar and modern Africa (and other things).

I've played Search and Destroy and The Long Road South in 28mm 1 to 1 scale using Disposable Heroes rules. The rule set covers Vietnam, the Falklands and various Cold War forces. I like it very much and recommend them.
I've also played the 2 Hour Wargames variant of Nuts for the Vietnam era at a convention. That was fun and furious as well. The 2 Hour Wargames seems geared to slightly smaller games than the Disposable Heroes rules. Good luck, and good gaming.

I've played the Nato vs. Warsaw Pact today in 15mm using Flames of War moderns, not too impressed with Soviet/Russian stuff compared to invincible Western tech.

Played 28mm Somali gangs vs. USA with Seek Out, Close With, and Destroy from Iron Ivan, liked it a lot. Also tried 2 Hour Wargame's "5150" or perhaps it was called "Chain Reaction" at the time. I plan on trying Ambush Alley soon.

I have a fistful of 1/285 stuff but only use it for Ogre Miniatures.

Major Mike08 Jan 2011 9:22 p.m. PST

1,2,6,7,8 in 1/285 or 20mm

I'd like to see all of them in 28mm. And I would use Force on Force.

We used to play 1/285 Arab-Israeli 73 with house rules and that was a lot of fun. Lately we have been playing 28mm US-Insurgents 2003 time period with a mixed set of rules, some Arc of Fire, some Battleground and some downloaded rules all mixed together.

cold war 6mm don't have a rule set yet just starting to build the armies. I would like to see if anyone has played modern spearhead or the GHQ moder rules.

BGMR (Battle Group Modern Rules) are very popular in the UK and are used for the World Championships and several other competitions. This is 1/300 or 1/285 and is the current evolution of the original 1980's Challenger rules and subsequent derivatives. Support is based at the BGMR Yahoo Group where the rules are available as a free download.

crbeck8813 Jun 2011 6:04 a.m. PST

Where can you find BGMR (Battle Group Modern Rules) to purchase?

Omemin13 Jun 2011 9:14 a.m. PST

Bill, you can borrow my Combined Arms rules (Command Decision II for moderns). It's the best I've used for operational battles. Better to go with 1:285 or equivalent, though, as figure density is high in the more modern stuff.

For Korea, a decent World War II set will usually suffice.
