What rules sets cover the FFL in action, particularly in North Africa? Does The Sword and The Flame actually have the FFL and Arabs in the rules or is it a supplement? What other good sets are out there? What do you like and why?

There is a TSATF supplement called THE SWORD IN NORTH AFRICA that caters specifically to Legion vs. Arabs. I believe, unlike some of the many official variants, it was written by Larry Brom, author of the original rules. Like all those supplements however, it does requires a set of those original rules or the 20th Anniversary version, in order to play. The Legion supplement includes rules for assaulting and defending FORTS of the Beau Geste variety, as well as "Le Cafard" (The Madness), "Going Camerone" and desertion.

Old Glory has Sons of the Desert

I won't assume here but the other rules in this Quality Die series have been eviscerated by players. Nonetheless there are elements one could take from it. There's some interesting background material, scenarios, and illustrations even if it does need work in terms of complete playability.

There's also an old set called March or Die! that I can't find a link to – little staple-bound typed up thing.

Thanks – in my websearches, I didn't find Sword of Africa on the TSATF website, though there was his old rules – Brom Geste. Thanks, Flashman, I'll check those out. Mark – I also didn't see anything about Din of Battle on the Piquet website. OOP?

Another option is Colonial Adventures from Two Hour Wargames

Yes, stay away from Sons of the Desert. If I recall right, we spent most of the two games that we played trying to figure out what the author's intentions actually were. If I recall right the morale system was really messed up as it seems your morale improved the worse the situation got for the unit in question!

TSAT is a good option for that era.

If you do a fort defense; use the Yaquinto rules from their French Foreign Legion game. Grappling hooks, mining, jumping, and dynamite. Also a rule for Legionnaires going nuts; good stuff.

It may help your search if you look for the full title, "The Sword In North Africa" (TSINA) at the Sergeants 3 site.

Incidentally, the aforementioned Yaquinto FFL Game was written by Larry Brom, and is the basis of the TSINA variant to TSATF.

Yes, I'm afraid I must agree with the poor reviews for SOD--very possibly the least/worst proofread and tested set of rules ever published.

However, TSINA has been widely played and "proofed" for years and is ready to play.

For The Sword in North Africa go to this link sergeants3.com/18.html and then scroll about half way down. As others have said, you will require TSATF to play this.

I'm thinking of using 'Soldiers of the Queen' myself

Mark RedLinePS08 Jan 2011 1:01 p.m. PST

Din of Battle doesn't appear to be available on the Piquet web site so guess it's OOP while we wait for Din of Battle II. I think you'll need the Piquet core rules to play it anyway.
Anyway found Larry Broms "Brom's Geste" rules on freewargamesrules!

There's Colonial Adventures from 2 hour wargames. I've also ran FFL using Chain Reation. CA has units taking reation checks and CR has it by man.

Thanks, guys. It looks like the FFL variant is included in the 20th Anniversary TSATF so I'll try to pick that up as well check out some other possibilities. I've TSATF before and like it well enough so I might just run with it. Thanks again!

Be careful, the variant included in the 20th Anniversary TSatF is "The Sword in Africa," for small unit/skmirmish gaming with your typical British explorers, not the FFL. What you want is "The Sword in North Africa," available separately on their website. I have both, and greatly enjoy the TSatF flavor. It's exactly what Mad Guru said above, TSINA covers the Legion and Arabs specifically.

Highly recommended.

The sword and the flame is the best colonial games. You need an additional module.

I owned the rules called sons of the desert. The morale rule is terrible as the worst troups have better chance to rally. They don't work same as the other variants (samurai, Indian wars and pirates).

The yaquinto board games is awesome. Played it with 54mm under George Carr Jr 15 years ago and it was a lot of fun. I purchased a copy on eBay last year. Was like $75. USD
