For space considerations, I am looking at doing Black Powder in 15mm, starting from scratch. This could be the current horse & musket rules as well as future expansions, such as ancients and medieval. I need help with basing and units. My gut instinct is to make stands 20mmX40mm with one rank of infantry. I read the Rick Priestly says 15mm frontage should be 120mm-160mm. This give three to four stands for frontage. I'm guessing 4 stands would be good for a standard unit? 4x1 stands for line, 2x2 for attack column, and 1x4 for march column? What about 40mmX40mm bases? Might they be better? 1x3 for line, 2x2 attack, and 1x3 for march? Might this look more imposing than four smaller stands? What do you fellas think and use? If you were starting from scratch like me, what is the best way to go for 15mm and get a good visual sight? (Please no 10mm or 6mm suggestions--I love the scales, enjoy playing them, tried painting them, and was not for me. ;-) |

We actually have 2 different schemes. Our Franco Prussian are mounted 3 stands 40x20 with 3 figs each(a holdover from our Warmaster F-P varient),line is 3 across, column 2 in front,1 behind, march 3 back. I use 4-6 20x40 with 2x2 figs for my other periods. |

40mm frontage seems to be the most common basing standard for 15mm. I use 1 inch frontage x 3/4 inch depth with 2 figures for AWI, and 30mm square with 3 figures for Colonial Sudan. For WSS and GNW I use 40mmx20mm with 4 figures single ranked. Line formation does look very thin though. I have thought about using 6 figures in 2 offset ranks of 3 each. |

Actually, for Black Powder 15mm ACW, I'm going with 6 stands 1" wide by either 1" or 1.25" deep with 4 figures in 2 ranks (so 24 figures). Large units are 8 stands, small are 4, tiny are 2. I was going to do all units being 4 stands – normal units would be four 40mmx30mm stands with 8 figures on each (4 across, 2 deep). Large units use four 50mmx30mm stands (5 across, 2 deep). Small units use four 30mm square stands (3x2). The reason I abandoned this is I wanted units in march (road) column to be as long or longer than they are wide when in line formation (which is realistic). It also helps to keep my fenced roads narrow (otherwise the space between fences would have to be slightly larger than 50mm). My cav will be on 1.5" square stands 3 cav per stand. Average unit might only be four stands since the average cav unit was smaller than the average infantry unit (IMHO). For FPW, same basing but 8 stands for Prussians, 6 for French. Although I might use only 3 figures per stand on 1" wide x .75" stands. For ACW I should be able to play up to 6 players with each player running a brigade (4-6 regiments) plus brigade artillery and maybe a cav unit or 2 on a 6' x 5' table. |

40mm br 20mm is what I would choose. In 15mm Id probably have 4 to 6 stands per battalion though. I would consider two ranks per stand, depending on the figure size. With 15mm you can pull of some nice big battalions. If money was an issue, I might reduce a unit to 3 stands per battalion. Cavalry could be based on the same stand in a single rank. In short I would echo the warmaster look, but slightly more grandoise. |

I do mine on 20mm square bases for infantry and 25mm squares for cav. I put four infantry on a base and two cav. Infantry units are about 6 stands, cav are about 8. It works pretty well. Eventually I'll probably increase the size of the units. |

I have done my 15mm ACW figures for Black Powder on 40x20's. 8 infantry figures on each stand, or 3 Cavalry. I am using three bases for standard regiments. That way I get the flag in the dead centre. Picture below. link Artillery is on 40x40 bases. Brigade command on 30mm round bases and Divisional command on 40mm round bases. Have not thought about the army command bases. |

I'm going pretty much the same as Dave Gamer with standard unit being 6 bases 1x1" with 5-6 figs on, 4 bases for small and large probably 6 bases 1.5x1" with 7-8 figs. |

Since the OP was posted to the Ancients Discussion message board as well, I will add my two denarii's worth on the subject. It appears that the upcoming Hail Caesar ancients rules will have a similar approach to basing as Black Powder. For 15mm models, recommended frontage for "standard" sized units will be 120-160mm, as in BP. Rules author Rick Priestley has recently posted a preliminary list of recommended base and unit sizes in the Files section of the Hail Caesar fan group on Yahoo: link From the above, it would be pretty simple to work out whatever 15mm unit sizes you like for HC. My own armies are mounted on 40mm-wide bases, and I plan to field units of 12 bases for my Roman legionaries (36 models, 3 ranks deep), 16 bases for my Gauls (48 models, 4 ranks deep), 8 bases for cavalry (16 models, 2 ranks deep), and 4-6 bases (8-12 models) for skirmishers. Cheers, Scott |

I like the 40x20 with 2 ranks. 4 stands per normal unit. |

Why do most gamers go with small base size, why not try the way i have done the basing for the some Romans and samnites. Standard unit is made up of 2x 60mm x 30mm over all unit size is 120mm with 16 figures. Standard Light units are on 4x 30mm x 30mm 12 figures Warband standard unit are 2 x 60mm x 60mm 16 figures Best thing about this way of basing is you are not moving 100's of stands. If you check out this battle report you can see pic's of the basing link |
