I'm referring to eye candy, even if you find the mechanics leave a lot to be desired. My two favorites happen to be sets I enjoy: Black Powder and The Great War. |

Republic to Empire both in terms of eye candy and mechanics! |

Warmaster Ancients is quite nice as is FoG. I'll second Black Powder as well. |
Plynkes | 03 Dec 2010 9:07 a.m. PST |
Yeah, Black Powder and Warhammer Great War. Have to agree there. Also the recent Triumph and Tragedy Colonial supplement. Nice sepia-tone pages and tons of colour eye-candy pics. A few steps up in visual quality from previous publications in that line. |

1870. I don't play the rules, just read the historical commentary, use the maps and OBs and gasp at the astonishing photos. |

Another vote for FOG and I also really like Regimental Fire & Fury |

I would put any of the FoW series up there. For me WAB would be near the top. VR James Mattes |

I would say Battlefront and GW have the highest production values for rule sets. |

Anima Tactics. So pretty. (If you're into anime, of course.) |

1776 From back in the 70s, it was (is) a nicely illustrated rules set for the American Revolution. Nice period engraving illustrations. Nice examples of play. Understated, yet attractive. Best of all, being staple bound, it has not fallen apart! |

Tie: The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game(s) The Battle of the Five Armies Warmaster Ancients Great photos and illustrations, a pleasing layout and design, and the decision to give the pages a "parchment" coloring was brilliant. |

Napoleon although I don't play it is a really great book. Of those I play Lasalle looks the best. |

This Quar's War and Songs Of Our Ancestors way out front. The Sword And The Flame (20th) leads the rest of the pack. Andrew |

This Quar's War, and Heavy Gear Blitz Locked & Loaded. Both manage to really evoke the atmosphere and ambience of their respective settings thanks to their high production values. |

Tactica. It started the nice glossy color presentation. GW's War of the Ring. Pretty awesome pics througout the book. Black Powder. Warzone. Lots of cool fluff with many color pics. The Rules with No Name. Very nice. |

Probably the Napoleonic Naval set that was recently released. Lots of nice color pics in it, but it was rather expensive, and the rules are rather simplistic, so leave a lot to be desired beyond functionality as an entry level set. I generally prefer less expensive rules sets with excellent gaming systems for increased replay interest, and plain, printed content. |

I agree about Tactica – When I first got it many years ago, it was so different to the other rules – very attractive. If I was to go for one more recently, it would be Warmaster Ancients. |

In this order Black Powder War of the Ring WAB 2 I would have the new WHFB 8th in first but don't actually own it.Warhammer Great War is also nice and if it was hardback it would be up there too. You FOW guys don't remember all the old books then? We had 20 or so players in our store group and allmost all had to take their books to get spiral bound because they fell apart the first time you opened them. That was when the blisters used to fall apart too.The joke in the store was that they must not have any good glue in New Zealand |

I'm fond of FoG. I always thought the Tactica looked pretty, and Brian Stokes' House Rules Napoleonics had a beautiful cover. |
