Just picked up the latest leaflet in the Post Office. VAT at 20% will be charged on some products from 31 January 2011, including Airsure to the EU, standard parcels with compensation, and Special Delivery by 9am (also 1pm with Saturday guarantee and/or consequential loss). It will not affect 1st and 2nd class post. As far as I can tell it will probably have minimal effect on anyone except traders that send large parcels with extra compensation, which I guess is the terrain and carry-case makers. As far as I can tell it will probably have minimal effect on anyone except traders that send large parcels with extra compensation, which I guess is the terrain and carry-case makers. Shouldn't that be "except traders who aren't registered for VAT that send large parcels etc
? Full list of affected service – bit.ly/aUhv6g – and the key services that remain exempt from VAT: UK Services * First and Second Class (Stamped, Franked and PPI) * Special Delivery Next Day (Stamped and Franked) * Standard Parcels * Recorded Signed For International Services * International Airmail * All HM Forces Mail (BFPO) Same EU ruling led to Italian post adding 20% VAT to their parcels deliveries in August. :-( -- Martin Stephenson Vexillia: Wargames Miniatures & Accessories vexillia.ltd.uk gallery.vexillia.ltd.uk pikeandplunder.vexillia.ltd.uk |

What I really hate is being charged VAT by British traders when VAT is not payable in the US
I believe we had a full scale shootin' war over that 200 years ago |

VAT is zero rated for any export outside the EU so you shouldn't see it on any invoice for goods received by post or courier (if you do tell the sender of their error). For any purchases you make whilst in the UK you should ask the trader to apply the retail export scheme which enables you to get a refund of the VAT charged. |
